    The Kogi State Commissioner for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Hon. Salifu Isah Idachaba on Friday in Ekiti indicated interest of Kogi to host the next 2022 National Arts Festival (NAFEST) in the state

    The commissioner disclosed this during a chat with the management of Kogi State Council for Arts and Culture, during his supervisory visit to the State’s pavilion at the on going Ekiti NAFEST 2021.

    In a press statement signed by the information Officer of KGSCAC, Comrade Gabriel Edicha stressed that the move was predicated on Governor Bello’s love for arts and culture, and also due to the impressive records of commitment of the State’s contingent at every festival in recent years.

    To express the State Government’s readiness towards hosting the next edition in 2022, the Commissioner held a close-door meeting with the Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe, in company of Kogi State Ambassador of Culture, Hon Kemi Olawumi and SSA on Culture, Hon Oluwafemi Bolaji respectively.

    In their separate remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Hon Ibrahim Benjamin, the Director, Culture, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Chris Yakubu, Kogi State Ambassador of Culture and SSA on Cultural integration, Hon Kemi Olawumi ICON and the Senior Special Adviser on Culture, Hon Oluwafemi Bolaji said Kogi has all it takes to host the next festival.

    They expressed satisfaction with the impressive records of the Council at all times, urging them to go for more laurels in Ekiti.

    Other States that have indicated interest to host the festival are Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Imo states respectively.

    The Kogi State governor,  Alhaji Yahaya Bello over the weekend in Lokoja charged the State contingents to showcase the rich arts, culture and mineral resources that abound in the state at this year’s NAFEST.

    Approving the participation of Kogi State Council for Arts and Culture (KSCAC) in the 34th edition of National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST) holding in Ekiti State, governor Bello enjoined the participants to be exemplary in all fields.

    The Commissioner for Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Comrade Salifu Idachaba disclosed in Lokoja in a statement signed by the information Officer in-charge of the ministry, Comrade Gabriel Edicha.

    Idachaba who delivered the governor’s message charged the  State contingent to be of good character and showcase the rich arts, culture and mineral resources that abound in the state.

    He also enjoined the state contingents to win laurels, in order to justify the support of the government and people of the state.

    The commissioner, expressed confidence that the state representatives would do the state proud, in view of the immense preparation by the artistes towards the event.

    The festival which is an annual event that brings all the states’ Council for Arts and Culture in the federation together to showcase the diverse rich cultures of the participating states is to commence from 13th – 19th November 2021.

    Meanwhile, the Director of Council for Arts and Culture, Kogi state, Mrs. Wosilat Owuda also assured that the state’s contingents are in one spirit for the festival and confidence in bringing glory to the state.

    Again, Gunmen kills Six, Houses Razed To ashes In Bagana Community Kogi State

    No fewer than six persons were reportedly killed, and many houses razed down in a  sustained attack by unknown gunmen  in the early hours of Monday on Bagana village in omala Local government of kogi state.

    It could be recalled that a similar attack occured barely a month ago leading to the death of about nine persons and property worth millions of naira destroyed, thereby forcing hundreds of inhabitants to seek refuge in neighbouring communities.

    According to an eye witness, the attackers went straight to the House of one Chief Salifu Anyebe, whose stool in a fortnight ago was classified to third class – set the palace ablaze and in the process, shot three persons including one  Madam Achebe Alih, AKA “Mama Teacher” to death.

    It was gathered that, the attackers, who may have been allegedly linked to an ‘opposition clan’ to his ascendancy, had planned to attack him during the proposed ceremony of the title.

    Our correspondent reliably gathered that the information of the attack  leaked to the upgraded chief, forcing the abrupt suspension of the proposed ceremony.

    “Despite the suspension, the attackers went on to attack the palace leading to complete burning down of his palace, his car and other valuable Properties belonging to the chief and close families that lived in cluster with him.” Eye witness said.

    Daybreak equally gathered that immediately the attackers left, some militias from nearby communities were allegedly mobilised, armed with sophisticated weapons  and combustible materials, went on burning spree razing down houses belonging to the suspected clans and those ‘on the fence’ in the ongoing crisis .

    Our Correspondent reliably  gathered, that the reprisal led to the burning down of the palace of the Oga Onu Ife, a paramount ruler and the District Head of Bagana, Chief Alih Haruna, and other houses belonging to some notable inhabitants.

    According to the locals, a House belonging to the Serving Councillor, representing the District, Hon. Alidu Usman Idakwo and those of other tribes were not spared.

    A local who could not hold back tears over the wanton destruction of lives and property lamented at the nonchalant attitude of the government whom he alleged were only waiting to commiserate with the people rather than taking divisive action against the perpetrators.

    He added that since 2013 that the crisis erupted as Fulani herders and farmers clashes which later generated  into ethnic and Clannish cleansing, lamented that no fewer than 300 persons have  loss their lives and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

    In his reaction, the Special Adviser on Security to the Omala LGA, Hon. Steve Shaibu confirmed the death of six persons while one person was critically injured and has  been evacuated to undisclosed health facility in a nearby village.

    The Special Adviser gave the names of the deceased as Suleiman Baba, Yusuf Lere, Mrs  Achebe  Alih, Abubakar Salifu, while Danlami Yahaya and Ugbede Attah are receiving treatment in an undisclosed health care.

    The leader of Indigenous people of Bagana, Alhaji Umar Bagana called on Governor Yahaya Bello to enforce his directives to the Chiefs to relocate to their respective domain as a measure to tame the tide of violence being  unleashed on the Community.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Idrisu Dauda Dabban in company of the chairman of Omala LGA Hon. Ibrahim  Aboh had on Tuesday visited the area and as usual assured the people to return home  that  peace,  of the graveyard- has returned, adding that the police have commenced discreet investigation to bring the perpetrators to book.

    In his bid to stem the tide of flooding and associated weather challenges facing the state the Kogi State Governor,  Alhaji Yahaya Bello has Commissioned Automatic Telemetry and Manual weather stations at Bagana in Omala LGA and Kogi state university Anyigba in Dekina Local Government Area respectively.

    The governor who was represented at the Commissioning of the project, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon Victor Adewale Omofaiye urged the people to support Governor Yahaya Bello led administration in ensuring that the equipment are judiciously put to use.

    He noted that the data collected would be used to improve on fishing and farming activities, which is the major occupations of the area, urging them to adhere strictly to the safety measures when threats of flash flooding and actual flooding occurred.

    At the Kogi state university Anyigba , the commissioner thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Marietu Tenuche for the show of enthusiasm, as the team was treated to a rousing welcome.

    He reminded the Vice Chancellor of the competing demands for the locations, but the Governor, however, chose the University as his show of love for the Institution.

    While reiterating the need for adequate care of the installed equipment, as well as put to optimal use, the Commissioner pointed out that the equipment would aid teaching and learning by the students in the department of Geography and allied courses.

    In her speech, the Project Coordinator, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto congratulated the Vice Chancellor and the entire University community for the choice of the University for the installation of the state of the art equipment; and called for the protection of the equipments

    The Federal Capital Territory Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu has commended the peaceful conduct of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  party congresses held in the Federal Capital Territory and Kogi state on Saturday.  
    The minister who expressed happiness congratulated Hon Abdulmalik Usman, and Hon. Abdullahi Bello, for their re-election as state chairmen of FCT and Kogi state chapter of the All Progressives Congress respectively. 

    She described their re-elections and the peaceful conduct of the state congresses as a testament of the party’s preparedness to win the general elections come 2023, also commended other members of the state executives on their emergence.  

    She said,  “I am delighted with the outcome of the APC congress in the Federal Capital Territory. It witnessed the presence of majorities of the FCT stakeholders and other party faithful. It was most peaceful and rancour free.”  
    “The re-election of Hon Abdulmalik Usman along side his other executive members is a clear testimony that dedication and hard work never remains unpaid.

    You always bring positive energy to the party. Your re-election is one of the best decisions our party has ever made. Congratulations!”  

    Similarly, the minister said she was overwhelmed by the joy of seeing, Hon. Abdullahi Bello’s, emergence as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kogi state, noting that the party would be more focused come 2023.  

    “I feel so overwhelmed by the joy of seeing you being re-elected. You made us all proud with this win. I’m so happy that your talent and hard work had finally been rewarded. You really deserved this position more than anyone else”, she affirmed.  

    She  called on others to join hands with the newly elected executive members of the party, Aliyu and assured that with the peaceful conduct of the state congresses the party is more prepared to challenge any opposition party in the forthcoming general elections.

    The spoke person of the Kogi State Police Command, DSP William Ovye Aya, on Sunday evening said the Command has commenced investigation of four police officers who allegedly extorted money from passengers while on patrol duty.

    DSP William Aya, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Sunday and made available to newsmen.

    He stated that the Kogi State Police Command has commenced investigations into a trending video where Police personnel attached to Adogo Division, while on patrol duty along Adogo-Okene road, allegedly committed the offence.

    The statement further disclosed that the officers reportedly extorted the sum of Twenty-Five Thousand Naira (N25,000) from a traveller while another was physically assaulted by one of the men in uniform.

    “The officers are: ASP Isah Barnabas, Inspector Ifediegwu Godwin, Sgt Emmanuel Ochima and CPL Umameh Mathias who physically assaulted one of the travellers.”

    It was stated that ASP Barnabas has been issued with an official query while the three other junior officers are currently undergoing orderly room trial (Police internal disciplinary actions).

    “The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, CP Idrisu Dauda Dabban while condemning the incident, noted that the Police officers have been identified and detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department.

    “The CP further noted that the Command is doing its best to establish contact with the victims, enjoining them to reach out to the Command as he assured that any of the officers found wanting in the investigations would be dealt with accordingly.

    Kogi state Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello on Saturday in Lokoja reinstated his administration’s commitment to usher-in qualitative education by raising budgetary allocation to educational sector to 30% in the 2022 fiscal year.

    Bello disclosed this during the grand finale of the 4 weeks Pharmacist Abdukareem Asuku Youth Empowerment Foundation (PAAYEF) Quiz Competition for public Secondary Schools in Kogi state.

    The Governor who stressed the importance of education as the bedrock of development, said, he will ensure that both infrastructural development, welbeing of teachers and students are enhanced for maximum productivity.

    He said, as a beneficiary of public Educational system and have been blessed to the level of being a Governor of the state, he will have no cause than to raise the bar for the future generations.

    He informed that the state Education law has forbidden pupils from roaming the streets when they are supposed to be in school, promising to deploy enough resources to the sector that will make private schools unattractive to students and their parents.

    According to him , “No child during my tenure, will be abducted from schools or anywhere across the state . I will not tolerate politicisation of Security in the state. We have put measures in place to safeguard our pupils and their teachers and i call on stakeholders to join the crusade.”

    He commended the promoter of the Foundation, Pharmacist Abdukareem Asuku, who is also his Chief of Staff and enjoined his appointees and elected members in the administration to contribute to the development of Education in the state.

    He averred that, it was his desire to tap the numerous solid minerals that abound in the state using relevant manpower that in formed the establishment of Confluence University of Science and Technology Osara and massive investment into Korean Institute of Advanced Technology KOICA in Lokoja.

    In his remarks, the state commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Wemi Jones, disclosed that kogi which was rated number 28 in Waec pass rate in 2018, had worked hard to change the narrative by upscaling to 14 position in the last Waec released result.

    He assured the people that the state will not rest on its oars until it has won first position in all public examinations in the country, urging all stakeholders to contribute their quota to the development of Educational sector.

    In a remark, the founder, Pharmacist Abdukareem Asuku said, the competition was his modest contribution to raise confidence and consciousness of students of public schools in the state.

    Meanwhile, Tijani Sadig from Demonstration Secondary School Onikuko Ogaminana won first position in the written test pocketing a university scholarship from the foundation.

    Musa Alhassan from Government Science Secondary School Okenya and Sam Abdullazeez of ECSS Ogaminana who came second and third positions respectively would have their school and Weac or NECO fees borne by the Foundation while Abu David of Saint Peters Idah and Seidu Adavuruku of Demonstration Secondary School bagged consolation prizes.

    NSPRI introduces Post Harvest Crop losses Prevention Technology In Kogi

    As part of efforts to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure availability of quality produce, the Nigeria Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) has introduced three newly-invented technology-based storage equipment to Kogi farmers.

    Performing the commissioning and distribution of the equipment to nine Multi-Purpose Cooperative groups at the state Agricultural Development Project (ADP) premises in Lokoja, the Kogi state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr David Apeh said post harvest losses had over the years posed a great challenge to the agriculture sector culminating in food insecurity.

    Apeh who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Malam Sani Abdulganiyu  commended NSPRI for introducing Kogi farmers to technology-based devices saying that the State, through the ADP was already in partnership with the institute.

    He added that whatever would be done to enable more farmers to benefit from the technological inventions, especially the facilities, would be handled by the ADP with full support of government.

    Speaking earlier, the NSPRI Team Lead, Dr Olaleye Oladimeji, said the inventions were aimed at alleviating post-harvest losses often associated with agricultural produce.

    Oladimeji said that the beneficiaries comprised farmers, handlers and marketers of agricultural produce identified through collaboration with the state ADP.

    “The government as we know has been doing much in promoting agricultural production but we find out that when you produce after sometimes because of poor handling and inadequate knowledge to preserve the produce most of them get lost.

    Also speaking, Mrs Omolola Ogunjinrin, Agricultural Engineer with NSPRI who took representatives of the nine benefitting cooperative groups through on a demonstration of operational workings of the equipment urged them to adhere strictly to the instructions.

    Ogunjinrin said that the hermetic steel storage drums could be used to store grains such as beans, maize, rice, millet and sorghum for between six months and one year without adding chemicals.

    She said some of the institute’s inventions including iced fish box, the Hermetic steel drum and smoking kiln had already been patented and published by their researchers.

    The Managing Director of ADP, Alhaji Bello Ogirima,commended NSPRI for the collaboration to arrest post-harvest losses and charged the beneficiaries not to sell off the equipment to meet other commitments.

    Kogi State Commissioner of Agriculture, Hon. David Apeh on Thursday in Lokoja restated its commitment towards food security, wipeout hunger and poverty in the state.

    Apeh who gave the assurance while speaking during the celebration of this year’s World Food Day held in Lokoja said this year’s Day was organised by the ActionAid Nigeria and Participation Initiative for Behavioral Change In Development (PIBCID) in collaboration with the Kogi State Ministry of Agriculture, Titled: “Our Actions Are Our Future”

    According to the commissioner, “Governor Yahaya Bello has done so much in the fight against hunger, poverty and disease since he came on board through prompt payment of counterparts funding to international donor agencies in order to ensure and promote food security in the state”

    Apeh said the journey of agricultural development in the state has been eventful and very rewarding with an assurance that the sector will continue to receive priority attention now and in the future.

    The commissioner enumerated some of the major agricultural activities in the state to include; cassava, yam, rice, fish and maize production amongst others adding that the fight against hunger and poverty in the state should be a collective war by government and the citizens.

    In her goodwill message at the event, the state commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Buba urged women in the state to key into agriculture as the sector serves the main source for human survival.

    She appreciated Governor Yahaya Bello’s effort to boost agriculture in the state and thanked ActioinAid Nigeria for sponsoring this year’s World Food Day Celebration in Kogi.

    Earlier, the Executive Director of Participation Initiative for Behavioral Change In Development ( PIBCID), Halima Sadiq said the decision to put in place the event is part of her organisation’s commitment towards ensuring food security sustainability and development of the Agricultural sector in Kogi State.

    “We celebrate this day to appreciate efforts by small holders farmers especially women in Agriculture who against all odds including COVID-19 Pandemic has ensured a reduction in the world hunger adding “the activity is aimed at creating global awareness and challenges of malnutrition as a result of sufferings from hunger and to further encourage nutrition sensitive Agriculture for citizens health and well being given that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation” Halima Sadiq explained.”

    She said the World Food Day is a global platform created for all actors in the Agriculture value chain involving producers, processors, off takers as well as consumers to collectively chart the way forward in addressing food security challenges.

    Halima was optimistic that collective efforts must be intensified to end hunger as a mandate in the sustainable development goals.

    In her address, the state coordinator of Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria, (SSWFON) Hajia Safia Yahaya commended ActionAid Nigeria for their advocacy that has yielded fruitful results of world Bank financial support.

    She also appreciated the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for his prompt release of counterpart funds towards their project implementation assuring that women farmers will put more efforts towards food sepp0curity and reduction of poverty to justify the support of the state government.

    Two Docks For Harbouring Fleeing Jail Break Inmate in Kogi

    A 43 – year old Enesi Ohinoyi and Ayuba Adeiza, 33 have been arraigned before Chief Magistrate court sitting in Lokoja for allegedly aiding, abetting and harbouring jail break inmates of Kabba Custodian Centre attack .

    The Suspects were said to have conspired and did an illegal act by screening an offender and convict, Olusegun Onimisi Otaru to escape from Kabba Custodian Centre of Nigerian  Correctional Services during the last September attack .

    Arraigning the suspects before the Chief Magistrate Court in Lokoja on Wednesday, the counsel to DSS urged the court through an application to remand the suspects to enable the security operatives complete their investigation .

    The Counsel explained that the application is in pursuant of sections 291 and 292 of Administration of Criminal Justice of Kogi State.

    He urged the court to remand, Enesi Ohinoyi and Ayuba Adeiza for their involvement in connection with the harbouring of Olusegun Onimisi Otaru who was convicted with death sentence.

    He stated that the operatives of Department of State Security Service and other Security agents had on intelligence report arrested the two suspects, while the convict  has since been returned to Kabba Correctional Centre respectively.

    The Chief Magistrate, A .A Umar in his ruling granted the application of the counsel to the DSS and remand the two suspects in Nigeria Correctional Centre till 20 October when the case would come up for hearing.
