Sanwo-Olu sacks LASU Council, orders fresh process for VC appointment

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accepted the recommendations of the Special Visitation Panel on the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Lagos State University (LASU).

The governor ordered the dissolution of the Governing Council and the removal of the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman for the flagrant violations of the extant laws guiding the appointment of a VC.

Sanwo-Olu cancelled the second failed exercise to appoint the 9th Substantive Vice-Chancellor.

He cited the flagrant contravention of extant laws, breach of due process, failure and disregard to follow laid down criteria guiding the process for the appointment as publicly advertised.

A statement by Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information said in due course, a new Governing Council for LASU will be constituted.

“The reconstituted Council shall conduct a new process for the appointment of the 9th Vice-Chancellor”, Omotoso noted.

Members of the Joint Council and the Senate Committee who participated in the two failed exercises of 2020 and 2021 to appoint a 9th Vice-Chancellor are exempted from further participation in the VC appointment process.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and management of the University were directed to elect new council members from the Senate.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council were ordered to proceed on leave with immediate effect till the end of the process for the appointment of the VC.

The state government said they failed to advise the Joint Council and Senate Committee against taking wrong decisions, which were against the provision of the law during the two failed exercises of 2020 and 2021.

An Acting Registrar will superintend over the new exercise, while the Acting VC is to forward to Sanwo-Olu, through the Surrogate Council (Special Adviser on Education), the list of all the Deputy Registrars of LASU for the purpose of appointing an Acting Registrar.

“The Governor, following the recommendation of the Special Visitation Panel, shall be setting up a full Visitation Panel for Lagos State University immediately”, the statement added.

  • Education remains our priority, says Gbajabiamila

Education remains our priority, says Gbajabiamila

. Speaker gets praises from LASU for attracting projects to varsity

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that education remains one of the major priorities of the 9th House of Representatives.

As such, Gbajabiamila said the House would do everything within its power to support educational institutions to have conducive learning environments.

This is even as the Speaker got praises from the management of the Lagos State University (LASU) for attracting various projects to the institution to aid learning.

Receiving the LASU management, led by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oyedamola Oke, during a thank-you visit in his office in Abuja on Monday, Gbajabiamila said he was ready to attract more projects to the institution and others.

Welcoming the delegation, the Speaker said: “we’re excited to receive guests like you, because it’s part of nation building. Education is very important to us. It’s on the front burner of our agenda.

“So, whatever we need to do to improve education, we have to do it.”

Gbajabiamila expressed delight that the WiFi project he attracted to LASU had been of immense help to the students’ learning.

“I’m glad to hear that the Hotspot is working. In this 21st Century, we shouldn’t be left behind in Nigeria. The ICT facilities have to be used to aid learning.

“On the auditorium, we’ll ensure that we do it from the beginning to the end. You can count on me, you can count on the House of Representatives.”

Gbajabiamila was dismayed that some products of Nigerian universities did not worth their names due to poor learning, saying, however, that the House was ready to reverse the trend.

“We’re here for you. That’s why we’re elected. Whatever we can do, please let us know. I cannot sit here and say I know all the problems of universities.

“You have to tell us what your problems are. We’ll be more than happy. Whatever it’s within our power to do, we’ll do it. Thank you very much for coming.”

Earlier, the LASU acting VC, Prof. Oke, said the visit was to thank the Speaker for the various projects he attracted to the university.

“You promised us the digitalization, and it’s almost done. We want to thank you for the Hotspot points. You also promised us an auditorium, we thank you for that.

“We want to thank you for your interest in education. We are very grateful for what you’ve done to us and for your interest in our institution.

“I’ll like to report that the digitalization project is on course, and it’s almost done. On the auditorium, the people you’ve sent have come and met us. We’ve identified a site for that, and it will soon commence.”

On his part, the former VC of the institution, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, who had led a delegation to the Speaker in 2019 to make request for the projects, said the Speaker’s interventions had started paying off as LASU was now Number 2 in the Nigerian universities’ ranking.

“When we came here in 2019, it was in trepidation. We knew we had challenges. We knew we wanted to compete internationally. But we couldn’t have done that.

“Today, you’ve put smiles on our faces. We are no Number 2 in Nigeria after University of Ibadan by the current ranking. Just like the VC said, we won’t disappoint you. We will keep faith to the ideals of the founding fathers of the institution.

“If we have all in place, nothing says that your university won’t become Number 1. The support you gave us in the area of Wi-Fi, that has helped a lot. The students are always around the Hotspot areas to use the internet for learning. Your name will remain indelible in the history of our university.”

Recall that earlier this year, Gbajabiamila facilitated the installation of free Wi-Fi in six public tertiary institutions in Lagos State for ease of learning.

The gesture on free Wi-Fi cut across both Federal Government-owned and Lagos State Government-owned tertiary institutions in the state. Tagged ‘Free Campus WiFi,’ the exercise was part of Gbajabiamila’s way of giving back to society, with a view to building a stronger education sector.

The six public tertiary institutions that have so far benefitted from the Speaker’s initiative on the free Wi-Fi are University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka Campus; Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu Campus; Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin; Michael Otedola College of Education (MOCOPED), Epe, and the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).

At LASU, students now access the free WiFi at the Babatunde Fashola Senate Building, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Social Sciences, LASU FM, the School of Communications and the ICT Center as well as some nearby locations.

LASU Postpones Examination, As NASU-LASU Begins Strike

Examinations at the Lagos State University have been put on hold after the Non-Academic Staff Union of the university started a warning strike over alleged breaches of agreement reached with the government.

Students were locked out of the school premises which prevented them from writing their exams on Monday.

The union had earlier in January went on a five-day warning strike by the institution Joint Action Committee to press their demands.

The Chairman, SSANU-LASU Chapter, Saheed Oseni, said that the three unions in the university totally complied with the strike in line with the directive of their national bodies.

‎The three unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Academic Technologists.‎

They said the university system is challenged by poor governance and administrative lapses which needs to be addressed holistically.

“Poor funding of our universities, shortfall in payment of staff salaries, increasing corruption in the university system should be addressed,” the union said in January.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Tajudeen Olumoko, while addressing students, said that the school authority was already making contact with state government and the issue would be resolved soon.

Damola Oke appointed acting LASU VC

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration of Lagos State University, Professor Damola Oke, has been appointed as the acting vice-chancellor of the institution.

He was appointed at the emergency senate meeting held on Monday.

Recall that Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and visitor to the University, had cancelled the ongoing process set up for the appointment of a substantive ninth Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The Governor further directed that a fresh process that would terminate in 45 days should commence immediately.

The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, was also directed to convene an emergency Senate meeting for the purpose of appointing one of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, who is not a candidate in the cancelled selection process as Acting Vice-Chancellor from Monday, January 11, 2021, when his tenure expires.

Professor Oke will be in acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor.

Gov Sanwo-Olu cancels LASU VC appointment process

Lagos State Governor and Visitor to Lagos State University, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has cancelled the ongoing process set up for the appointment of a substantive ninth Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The Governor further directed that a fresh process that would terminate in 45 days should commence immediately.

This was contained in a statement by Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, on Friday titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu cancels ongoing appointment of LASU VC, orders fresh process’.

It stated that the governor’s “decision on the cancellation came after a thorough investigation and stakeholders engagement, which were necessitated by various petitions against the selection process”.

The statement added, “Governor Sanwo-Olu was inundated with petitions arising from the selection process of the Vice-Chancellor by the Governing Council. After a thorough evaluation and investigation of the various complaints, Mr. Governor, in his capacity as the Visitor to the University ordered the cancellation of the process.

“The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, has also been directed to convene an emergency Senate meeting for the purpose of appointing one of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, who is not a candidate in the cancelled selection process as Acting Vice-Chancellor from Monday, January 11, 2021, when the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fagbohun expires.

“The Governor further directed that the Senate should select among its members, a pro tem chairman to superintend the meeting and conduct of the election of Acting Vice-Chancellor.”

Following the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent VC of LASU, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun, on Monday, January 11, 2021, a joint Selection Committee of the Senate and Council was set up by the university to interview candidates for the position.

The Committee was expected to submit the names of the three best candidates for the job for onward transmission to the Visitor (the Lagos State Governor) for the final selection of one successful candidate for the job.

Among the criteria set by the committee in the advertisement for the post required a successful applicant to be a Professor of at least 10 years standing, with good track record of academic excellence of local and international repute including supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students among others.

More than 18 Professors from about 10 universities applied for the job. But there was controversy over the qualification of some candidates selected to replace Fagbohun.

One of the three candidates was said not to be qualified for the job because his entry qualification to the university was the Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College and not Ph.D.

Another candidate was said not to be a professor of at least 10 years as stated in the advertisement for the job.
