NEMA Receives Another Batch Of 175 Stranded Nigerians From Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Thursday that it had received another batch of 175 Nigerian returnees from Libya.

They were received through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA), Lagos.

This batch makes a total of 333 stranded Nigerians repatriated to Nigeria through the European Union sponsorship program for Nigerians who got stranded on their failed attempt in search of greener pastures in foreign countries.

The returnees that were voluntarily assisted back in this batch consisted of 92 male adults, six male children, and nine male infants. In addition, there were 53 female adults, 12 female children, and three female infants

They arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja aboard Al Buraq Airline Boeing 737-400 with registration number 5A-WAC at about 2148hours.

They were received at the NAHCO Wing of the Airport. Earlier in the day, 158 were brought back.

One of the returnees, Omoniyi Azizat, a 21-year-old from Lagos who abandoned her education when she was 17 years old expressed regret over her misbehaviour.

She especially regretted wasting her father’s hard-earned money, for a move that eventually turned out fruitless.

“I lost my mum at a tender age and was being catered for by my maternal relations, I thought I was being maltreated and ran away from the house to meet my dad.

“From my father’s custody, a friend convinced me to meet her in Ibadan where I was introduced to the idea of travelling to Libya where I was told that I could work and receive a monthly salary of 120,000.

“I deceived my dad that I wanted to establish a business and he gave me N800,000 but I used it for the Libyan trip through the desert.

“I became slave and prostitute, I am not lying, I raised the equivalent of N2 million as a prostitute to free myself from my trafficker,” Ms Omoniyi explained.

The returnee, who was in tears, expressed her desire to return to school, disclosing that she stopped schooling at SS2 and have learnt her lessons

“The lessons are very very bitter, I wasted my life,” she buttressed. “I do not know my father’s location and I lost everything that I thought I could bring back home when our house was busted by the police and every one of us were thrown into prison while we were disposed of our savings and property, the phone had my dad’s contact.

“I have to wait for the time that my transport allowance will be given before I can buy a phone and try to gamble with several numbers to know if I can get dad’s contact

“I will never advise anyone to think of travelling out of the country. We don’t appreciate what we have until it is lost. Anyone thinking of travelling should forget it,” a now-remorseful Omoniyi declared

“The youth team manager Rabie Yassin, called for an immediate swab on all members of the mission in Tunisia,” a statement from Efa read.

“The Egyptian team, born in 2001, conducted a medical examination for the mission in Tunisia after the results showed that 17 players, in addition to the technical director Rabie Yassin, were infected with the Coronavirus.

“The Egyptian Federation demanded from the North African Union to conduct a swab in another accredited laboratory, and a meeting is now taking place between the Medical Committee of the North African Union and the Egyptian national team doctor Walid Mazhar to study the matter.

However, a tweet by EFA on Tuesday morning announced that the second test had Muhammad Ashraf, Muhammad Shehata and Mahmoud Saber Abdel Moneim return negative

“The results of the second swab performed on the youth team proved that the result of the smear of three players turned negative, namely Muhammad Ashraf, Muhammad Shehata and Mahmoud Saber Abdel Moneim. This morning, the test of Mr. Attia and Mahmoud Abdel Mohsen is repeated and also confirmed the positive sample of Rabie Yassin, technical director of the Young Pharaohs.”

Assuming the match result stands, Egypt must now defeat Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco to ensure their qualification for the 2021 Africa U20 Cup of Nations billed for Mauritania. There, Africa’s four representatives for the Fifa World Cup would be determined.

  • Rival Libyan leaders to hold Moscow peace talks on Monday: news agencies

Rival Libyan leaders to hold Moscow peace talks on Monday: news agencies

Libya’s warring rival leaders will hold peace talks in Moscow on Monday alongside representatives from Russia and Turkey, Russian news agencies cited the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying.

The talks come after a ceasefire in Libya, initiated by Turkey and Russia, saw a lull in heavy fighting and air strikes on Sunday, though both factions accused each other of violating the truce as skirmishes continued around the capital Tripoli.

Monday’s Moscow talks will be attended by Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), and by Fayez al-Serraj, who heads the rival Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), Russian news agencies reported.

Russia and Turkey’s foreign and defense ministers would also take part in the talks, the Interfax news agency cited the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying.

Lev Dengov, the head of the Russian contact group on Libya, said the warring factions would discuss “the possibility of signing a truce and the details of such a document,” Interfax reported.

Libya, which has been mired in turmoil since the toppling of strongman Muammar Gaddafi, has had two rival governments since 2014.

The conflict between the forces of the two factions has wrecked the country’s economy, fueled migrant smuggling and militancy, and disrupted oil supplies.

The Russo-Turkish peace push, the latest international attempt to stem the violence, comes more than nine months into an offensive on Tripoli by the LNA led by Haftar.

Turkey backs Haftar’s rival, Serraj, who heads the Tripoli-based GNA, while Russian military contractors have been deployed alongside Haftar’s LNA forces.

Asked about those mercenaries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that any Russian citizens fighting in Libya were not representing the interests of the Russian state or receiving money from it.

During a visit to Moscow on Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Berlin wanted to host Libyan peace talks to build on what she said she hoped would be successful joint efforts by Russia and Turkey to stop the conflict. (Reuters/NAN)
