Suarez ruled out of Uruguay duty with knee injury

Luis Suarez will not feature for Uruguay in September’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after suffering a knee injury against Villarreal on Sunday.

Suarez started for the first time of the new season for Atletico Madrid and equalised for Diego Simeone’s men to record his eighth goal involvement in 13 games against Villarreal.

However, the Atletico Madrid forward was forced off 14 minutes later after appearing to have discomfort in his left knee.

Following scans in Spain, Atletico Madrid have found a moderate swelling in Suarez’s knee.

They have now informed Uruguay that the 34-year-old will not be available for the World Cup qualifiers against Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The former FC Barcelona forward is expected to undergo further treatment throughout the week.

It however remains unclear whether he will be fit enough to feature against Espanyol on Sept. 12.

Fortunately for the La Liga champions, they acquired Matheus Cunha in late August and Angel Correa is in fine form, scoring three in his first three games of 2021/2022.

Uruguay, though, have not been so lucky.

Suarez’s injury further compounds Oscar Tabarez’s problems as he is left without two strikers for the qualifiers, with Edinson Cavani his other absentee.

Manchester United striker Cavani’s absence was confirmed on Monday, too.

Uruguay announced he would not be travelling to South America amid issues over quarantining on his return to Britain.

Atletico Madrid striker, Luis Suarez has tested positive for the coronavirus while on international duty with the Uruguay national team, the South American nation’s FA confirmed on Monday evening.

The news means he will miss two huge games this week for both club and country. Uruguay face Brazil on Tuesday November 17 in World Cup qualifying, while his new club Atletico Madrid face his former club Barcelona on Saturday.

The 33-year-old forward is one of three people in the Uruguay camp to test positive for the virus alongside goalkeeper Rodrigo Munoz and team attendant Matias Faral.

The national team also confirmed that the trio showed no symptoms and that they have followed the corresponding measures.

“All three mentioned are in good healthy state and have already implemented the measures needed for the case,’ the Uruguayan FA said on social media.

Arsene Wenger finally speaks on £40m plus 1 bid for Luis Suarez

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has admitted it was “ludicrous” to approve a bid of £40million plus one pound in 2013, to land Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

The Gunners were close to striking a deal with Real Madrid for Gonzalo Higuain, but Wenger shifted focus to Suarez after learning about a supposed release clause.

Arsenal bid just £1 above the £40m mark after agreeing terms with the player.

Liverpool rejected the offer, with owner John W. Henry infamously tweeting “What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?”

Wenger insists it was not Arsenal’s intention to annoy Liverpool, but simply to ascertain whether or not the release clause, which ultimately turned out to be bogus, was legitimate or not.

In his new autobiography ‘Arsene Wenger, My Life in Red and White’, Wenger wrote: “In 2014 we were looking to get Luis Suarez over.

“We had an agreement with the player and his agent. But the agent claimed that there was a clause: with an offer above £40 million, Liverpool would be obliged to let the player go.

“But thanks to an indiscretion within Liverpool. I found out that his clause never existed. To check this was true, we offered £40,000,001. This may have seemed ludicrous, I admit.

“But Liverpool did not want to sell Suarez, they could afford to keep him and there was already an offer from Barca on the horizon.”

Suarez scores as Barca condemn neighbours Espanyol to relegation

FC Barcelona kept up their pursuit of leaders Real Madrid in the La Liga title race by beating city rivals Espanyol 1-0 at home on Wednesday.

The slim win also condemned their neighbours to relegation from the top flight.

Luis Suarez struck the only goal in the 56th minute, lashing a loose ball into the net.

This was shortly after both sides had been reduced to 10 men each in a frantic start to the second half.

Barca’s teenage forward Ansu Fati was sent off for a reckless tackle five minutes after coming off the bench.

But Espanyol’s numerical advantage lasted only three minutes as Pol Lozano was dismissed, also following a VAR review.

Barca, chasing a third consecutive Spanish title, are on 76 points after 35 games while Real Madrid are top with 77.

The leaders can restore their four-point advantage when they host Alaves on Friday.

Espanyol, one of Spain’s most prestigious clubs, were relegated for the first time since winning promotion back to La Liga in 1994.

They are bottom of the table on 24 points after 35 games.

Barca had produced one of their best performances of the season by hammering Villarreal 4-1 away on Sunday.

But they looked sluggish at an empty Camp Nou, which normally would have been in full voice on derby day.

Espanyol frustrated their more illustrious neighbours in the first half with a five-man defence and created the better chances.

Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had to be aware to prevent his team mate Clement Lenglet from scoring an own goal just before half-time.

Espanyol’s Didac Vila fired the loose ball against the post.

Ter Stegen had also come to Barca’s rescue earlier, spreading his body and keeping out a low strike from Adri Embarba with his leg.

Barca found a way through with the help of their three forwards.
