    Nasarawa Govt. Orders Immediate Closure of Public, Private Schools Over security threat

    Nasarawa State Government has ordered the immediate closure of both public and private schools across the 13 local government areas of the state over security threat.

    The closure of schools was part of the resolution arrived at during an expanded State Executive Council meeting, which took place at the Government House, Lafia, on Wednesday, July 27.

    Addressing newsmen after the council meeting, state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Fatu Jimaita Sabo, said after reviewing the current situation in the country, especially regarding the security threats in the FCT, the state government decided to close both public and private schools with immediate effect.

    She said this became imperative considering the proximity of the state to the FCT as well as the resolve of the government to ensure that schools in Nasarawa operate within a safe environment.

    She, however, explained that those in exit classes, who were already writing their final examinations, especially in secondary schools, were exempted.

    She said: “We are appealing to parents not to panic. We all know that Nasarawa State is safe but this decision was taken as a proactive measure to ensure that our children are safe and continue to remain safe. That is for those within the state and those that came from other states to study here.

    “We want to also appeal to our principals and heads of respective schools, to also ensure that while we are closing these schools, we do it in an orderly manner.

    “There’s no threat to any life or property as of now in Nasarawa State. And as I mentioned, it’s just part of the government’s proactive measure. We are all aware that the Abdullahi Sule-led government has always prioritized security and safety of lives and property in Nasarawa State.”

    This comes days after Federal Government Colleges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) asked parents to pick up their wards immediately due to security threats.

    The Nasarawa State Government has awarded contracts for the construction of two markets at Akwanga and Nassarawa-Eggon Local Government Areas (LGAs).

    Shehu Tukur, Principal partner, Carnoni Associate, firm supervising the projects made the disclosure while handing over the designs of the sites to the contractors, Saturday in Akwanga LGA.

    According to the Principal partner, the market to be constructed in Akwanga is a 140 shops neighbourhood market with facilities befitting of international standard.

    He added that the neighborhood market in Akwanga would be the third in the state, apart from the once in Lafia and Keffi LGAs.

    He also said the contract for Very Important Personalities (VIP) guest house in Akwanga LGA is to remodel the old VIP build more than three decades ago. with a befitting event centre.

    Shehu Tukur also said the government has also awarded the contract for the construction of a befitting 300 capacity event centre at Akwanga LGA.

    He said the event centre is the first to be constructed by the government since the state was created in 1996.

    He added that the would also contract road leading to the VIP and event centre.

    He further disclosed that the state government has awarded contract for the construction of 450 shops modern market at Nassarawa-Eggon LGA.

    He assured that the consulting firm would monitor the three projects to ensure that the contractors adhere to standard based on the contracts agreements.

    He therefore promised that the two markets, VIP guest house and the event centre would be delivered by December 2021.

    Responding separately, Samuel Meshi and Danlami Idris, Chairmen of Akwanga and his Nassarawa-Eggon LGAs expressed gratitude to Governor Abdullahi Sule for the gesture.

    The Chairman of Akwanga was represented at the occasion by Safianu Isa, Deputy Chairman of the area, while his Nassarawa-Eggon counterpart was represented by Paul Ebuga, Secretary of the LGA.

    The two Chairmen on behalf of the people of their respective areas promised to provide the necessary support and supervision to ensure timely completion of the projects.

    In his goodwill message, Turaki Gamji, President of Nasarawa State Treaders Association expressed gratitude to the governor for giving attention to the welfare of Treaders.

    He described the governor as Treaders friendly and promised to support his administration is the state to succeed.

    The occasion was attended by stakeholders expecially elected and appointed government officials from the two LGAs.

    Nasarawa state government partners United Nations to resolve Herders Farmers conflicts

    Considering the resent challenges of insecurity in the state, the  Nasarawa state government says it has partnered with the united nations to resolve herders farmers conflict through the presentation of the Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (C-EWERS) for the state.

    This was disclosed in a speech presented by the special Adviser to Engr. Abdulahi Sule, on NGOs and Development Partners, Munira Abdullahi, who represented the governor  in a one day sensitization workshop on Peace and security in the conference room, ministry of Local Government and chieftaincy Affairs, saying  it is a collaborative development project of the Nasarawa State Government and the United Nations, geared towards Peace Building. 

    Munira also said TC-EWERS is a component of a broader project; adding that it is an integrated Approach to Building Peace in Nigeria’s Herders-Farmers Conflict, noting that the UN entities involved in this initiative are the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the office of the high commissioner for human rights (OHCHR), United Nations Women and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 

    “The UNDP is the UN’s Global Development Network. It seeks to promote technical investment cooperation among nations and advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life for themselves”. 

    The SA, however noted that the governor is very particular towards ensuring peace and security in Nasarawa State adding  that the commitment is deliberate step taken towards safeguarding the lives and properties of the people of Nasarawa State. 

    “This program is one of such engagements that serves as a follow up to series of high-level dialogues held between the UN and representatives across traditional institutions, religious organizations, security agencies, government officials including the executive, legislative and judiciary and other civil society organizations in the state”. 

    Some of the components of the project include a proposed Peace Building Agency in Nasarawa State that will harness and consolidate  knowledge gathered through engagements with traditional institutions, civil society, Local, State and Federal Governments as well as International Partners. 
    Hajia munira urged all the participant  to observe carefully what the presenters will put before them and to  actively participate through questions, observations and suggestions. 

    While appreciate the outstanding work that the United Nations have been doing in  State, the Senior Adviser also stressed that the state government under the leadership of His Excellency  Engr. Abdulahi Sule will be looking  forward to more collaborative developments.

    Nigerian Army pledges to partner Nasarawa govt on quality of education

    The Nigerian Army has pledged to partner the Nasarawa State Government to improve the quality of education in the state.

    Maj. Umar Idris-Ja’afar, Commandant, Command Science School Lafia, said this during a courtesy visit to Hajiya Fatu Sabo, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology on Monday in Lafia.

    The commandant said the military authority had established educational institutions in order to contribute to the human capital development in the country.

    He, however, appealed to the state government to post teachers to Command Secondary School and also consider the school in citing projects, as well as engage them in activities such as debate, inter schools competition, among others.

    Responding, the commissioner commended the military for its roles in the educational development of the state.

    Sabo said the state government under Gov. Abdullahi Sule was working assiduously to improve the quality of education and making it accessible to more children of school age.

    The commissioner, promised to forward all the request made by the commandant to the governor for approval.

    She, however, promised that the ministry would henceforth include the command schools in all its activities such as quiz, school debate and sporting competition.

    In his remarks, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Usman Abu assured that the ministry was ready to partner with the school to achieve the objectives of establishing it. (NAN)
