NIN Generated With BVN Must Be Updated At Enrolment Centres – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has insisted that it is compulsory for Nigerians to visit the enrolment centres to complete their National Identification Number registration.

It stressed that it was important for people not to get carried away with the generation of NIN due to Bank Verification Number (BVN) record harmonisation with the National Identity Database.

In a post on its Twitter handle on Tuesday, the agency asked those who have gotten their NIN through such a process to visit the enrolment centres to validate their number.

It said, “NIN generated by the BVN can only be used after it has been updated at the NIMC enrolment center. You must complete your NIN registration even if your BVN has generated a NIN.”

“If your NIN was generated due to BVN record harmonisation with the National Identity Database, you will not have access to the NIMC mobile app, and your NIN-SIM integration will be invalid.

“Kindly visit an enrolment centre to complete your NIN registration,” another tweet read.

The NIMC made the clarification following the controversy sparked by the use of shortcodes to generate the NIN.

This comes after some enrolees said they got the number after getting registered for the BVN, insisting that there was no need to visit any NIMC centre again.

Amid the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, thousands of Nigerians storm the NIMC enrolment centres daily.

There are fears that the rate of transmission at the enrolment centres is high because the enrolees fail to comply with the COVID-19 protocols.

No NIN, No Vehicle Registration – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the issuance of the National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory for all categories of vehicle registration.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said the move, which is in total compliance with the presidential directives, would commence from the second quarter of the year.

“Beginning from the second quarter of this year (2021), if you want to register your vehicle, it is going to be compulsory for you to provide your NIN. This is part of the security checks,” FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, was quoted as saying.

“So once you provide your NIN, it makes the matter easier and helps the government in national planning, critical decision making and also enhance adequate Intelligence gathering for the security of lives and properties.”

The FRSC had mandated all applicants of the National Driver’s Licence in the country to present their National Identification Number before they could be captured for any class of the licences produced by the FRSC.

Earlier, the Nigerian Communication Commission ordered telecommunications companies to deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their National Identity Number.

NIN: FG Attitude is Fuelling Stories That COVID-19 Isn’t Real – Alibaba

A COVID-19 survivor and comedian, Atunyota Akpobome, who is fondly called Ali Baba has taken a swipe at the Federal Government over the registration of the National Identity Number (NIN).

Ali Baba, who is also an actor, stated that the registration exercise came at the wrong time, considering the second wave of COVID-19 in the country.

He believes demanding NIN registration at this time is like supporting the notion that COVID-19 is not real and should not be taken seriously.

“The attitude of the government is also helping to fuel the stories that COVID-19 is not real because if COVID-19 is real, you won’t be talking about people going to do registration for NIN,” said the comedian who featured as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

He added, “It is important that people are considered first; when you ask people to go register for NIN, it means that you are endangering the people, it is like inviting them to a beach to come and party.”

Ali Baba noted that Nigeria should have gone past the stage where people would stay in long queues for registration.

He said by asking people to go to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) offices, they stand the risk of getting infected with COVID-19.

According to the comedian, it is important for the government to wake up to its responsibility of protecting the people.

He stated, ”It is not now that you have a pandemic that you should insist on that kind of thing, let pandemic be over; whatever you are waiting for can be done later

“The number of people that are going to become victims of this COVID-19 from going to register will nearly be like people that went to the beach.”

“Government has not really been in the good books of believability for people; then to crown it all, in the face of this second wave you are tell people to do national identification registration and people are going and packing themselves in places,” Ali Baba added.

He also asked the government to ensure that the doctors risking their lives to curb the spread of the disease and treat infected patients were well taken care of.

NIN: NIMC staff stage protest over poor working condition

Some staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Bayelsa State chapter, have embarked on an indefinite strike over poor allowance and poor working conditions in this COVID-19 regime.

Mr. Paul Soroh, who led the angry workers in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday said that while they work under pressure to enable Nigerians get their NIN for onward connection to their SIM cards, the Federal Government have failed to provide necessary tools for them to function effectively.

Explaining further, he said, “The protest that is ongoing nationwide is also as a result of the fact that they have also not been giving us Personal Protective Equipment, even though they were listed as essential workers during in the COVID-19 lockdown.

“As you know, workers on level 12 downwards are not supposed to be at work, but we came out to do this work voluntarily but because of the attitude of government, we are withdrawing our voluntary services until something is done about it.”

Meanwhile, the large crowd who besieged the office in order to carry out their registration after the Federal Government ordered telecom operators to link subscribers registered sim cards engaged the workers during the protest.

The visibly frustrated subscribers complained bitterly about the deadline given by the government, adding that they can’t afford to lose their network due to the strike.

NIN: Residents Stranded as NIMC Workers kick-off strike over funding, Covid-19 exposure

The ongoing National Identity Number (NIN) registration appears to be running into more troubled waters, as Nigerians who have turned up for the exercise have been left unattended at various registration centres.

This is because workers at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have embarked on strike across the country.

Some of the agency’s offices monitored by Channels Television on Thursday included Lagos, Abuja, Bauchi, and Taraba, among other states.

At the NIMC office located on the premises of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) office in Alausa, Lagos, hundreds of residents were seen as early as 8am.

However, the workers there refused to attend to the applicants, saying they were on strike to demand better welfare packages from the Federal Government.

One of the workers told Channels Television that the recent increase in the number of visitors at their office for registration of NIN had caused a lot of stress for them.

Apart from the demand for allowance, he said the government does not care about their safety as saying they could get infected with COVID-19 as they attend to hundreds of residents daily without protective kits.

In the nation’s capital, Abuja, the staff also complained about inadequate work equipment to protect them from Covid-19 and poor salary structure, among others.

They claimed that some of their members have contracted the disease and were neglected by the management of the agency.

The workers were also worried about the continuous breach of the Covid-19 protocols, considering the large crowds that show up for registration daily.

They vowed to continue the industrial actions until the issues raised were addressed by the relevant authorities.

The situation was also the same in Bauchi Stated where the staff of NIMC joined their counterparts in other parts of the country to down tools.

According to them, the refusal to work is in compliance with a directive following notice of strike issued by the NIMC Unit of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The NIN applicants in Bauchi were locked outside the gate of the NIMC office as staff of the agency withdrew their services.

Some of the workers who were seen on the NIMC premises stated that their demands for improved welfare, promotion, and provision of personal protective equipment, among others have been a long drawn issue.

In Taraba, the workers also complained about the poor condition of service, especially regarding their protection against COVID-19 infection.

BREAKING: FG suspend workers over extortion at NIMC centres

The Federal Government has suspended workers fingered in extortion at enrolment centres of the National Identity Management Commission.

It was gathered that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, ordered the immediate suspension of the staff members involved in extortion of applicants at the NIMC Bauchi and Kaduna state offices.

The NIMC on Sunday said the directive came on the heels of public outcry that some personnel of commission, particularly at enrolment centres in Bauchi and Kaduna were capitalising on the rush for National Identification Number by the public to perpetrate fraudulent activities.

A spokesperson for the commission, Kayode Adegoke, said in a statement issued in Abuja that the act was inimical to the policy directive of the Federal Government, which required mobile network subscribers to update their Subscriber Identification Module registration with a valid NIN.

Pantami restated his zero-tolerance stance on extortion, bribery and corruption.

He noted that such unethical practices if allowed to fester and not nipped in the bud by taking stiffer actions against the culprits, had the potency of derailing the SIM-NIN integration project.

The minister said enrolment for NIN was free of charge, adding that on no occasion should anyone pay to obtain an enrolment form or to have their biometrics captured.

“All personnel involved in the enrolment and NIN issuance exercise must carry out their respective duties professionally, fairly and with integrity,” the statement stated.

It added, “In light of the above, we wish to call on the general public to assist us in putting our commitments into action by sending proof of any nefarious activity within and around our enrolment centres.”

It urged the public to provide snapshots, footage and other proofs to help the government address the matter.
