Sen. Ekweremadu Proposes Political Solution To Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has proposed a political solution to ensure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He believes this can be achieved as the South-East Caucus in the National Assembly moves to intervene in the matter.

“We expect that ultimately, we find a political solution in respect of Nnamdi Kanu’s problem,” he said during an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy which aired on Friday.

“In the past, we have done similar things. What we want to see is to make sure that the Federal Government understands the feeling of our people.”

“It is not easy to predict right now, but what we want to see is to reduce tension in the South-East,” the lawmaker said in response to a question about the motive of the caucus to intervene in the matter.

The lawmaker recalled when the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Uwazuruike, was arrested during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He explained that during the administration of former President Musa Yar’Adua, he visited the late leader, alongside some senators, who invited the then minister of justice – a political development that led to Uwazuruike’s release.

“When Uwazuruike was detained by Obasanjo, there was tension until Yar’Adua came… eventually, we ended up in a political solution and Uwaruzuike was released. The same thing with Nnamdi Kanu, when he was detained, I also led a delegation to meet the President.

“We expect that just as we had some results in the past, maybe we should come out with something that should be acceptable by all the parties,” Ekweremadu added.

Calls for a separate state of Biafra are a sensitive subject in the country after a unilateral declaration of independence in 1967 sparked a brutal 30-month civil war.

More than one million people died, most of them Igbos, from the impact of conflict, hunger and disease.

Recently, the South-East region witnessed a chain of violence with attacks on several police stations and electoral facilities – incidents which authorities blamed on IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). But IPOB has repeatedly denied responsibility.

As Nigeria grapples with the call for a breakaway of a large chunk of the South East, another agitation has erupted in the South West for a Yoruba nation.

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu drags Kenyan Govt. to court over his rearrest

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has dragged the Kenyan Government to court.

Kanu instituted a case against the Kenyan Government through his legal team.

The Special Counsel to the IPOB leader, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this via his Twitter handle on Thursday.

“UPDATE: Extraordinary Rendition: Onyendu’s legal team has filed a suit in Kenya against the Kenyan government,” Ejimakor wrote.

Kanu was recently rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria.

The Kenyan High Commissioner, Wilfred Machage, refuted the claim that Kenyan police arrested Kanu.

Despite the denial, IPOB had continued to accuse Kenya of playing a role in Kanu’s rearrest.

Kanu is expected in court in October. The Nigerian government primarily charged him with treason.

Nnamdi Kanu: Igbo lawmakers to intervene, meet Buhari govt over IPOB leader

The Southeast caucus of the National Assembly has resolved to intervene in the issue of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The caucus resolved to seek political solution over Kanu’s matter.

To this end, the caucus resolved to set up a committee to interface with the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders over Kanu’s matter.

This was part of the r solutions reached by the caucus during a meeting held in Abuja, at the residence of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting reads partly: “We elaborately discussed the issue of Mazi Nnamdi and resolved to intervene.

“To this end we resolved to set up a committee to constructively interface with relevant stakeholders, the Federal Government and its relevant agencies towards finding a political solution. We will keep Ndigbo abreast of developments in regard.”

The caucus also commended IPOB for calling off the Monday sit-at-home order.

“Noted with delight that IPOB has called off the Monday sit-at-home order and resolved to ensure that nobody uses them as façades to bring ruination on Igbo land.

“Call on our people to go about their lawful businesses and enjoin our governors and the security agencies to rebuild confidence in our people by not only ensuring the security of their lives and properties, but also ensuring that our people feel safe as they undertake their legitimate businesses,” the lawmakers added.

Nnamdi Kanu’s trial: IPOB suspends sit-at-home order

    By Emeka Ogenyi
The planned sit-at-home ordered by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) scheduled to have commenced tomorrow (Monday) has been suspended due to the just began National Examination Council (NECO) Exam for junior secondary schools.
A new date for the commencement of the sit-at-home order, IPOB said would be announced later.

The pro Biafra group had penultimate week, in what appeared to be in solidarity with it’s detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, ordered for sit-at-home that would be observed every Monday throughout Igbo land, starting from August 9, until when his trial would end.
However, in a statement the IPOB leader’s younger brother, Kanunta Kanu said the group arrived at the decision, after listening to pleas from well meaning individuals and groups within and outside Biafra land that the order be suspended to allow students from Igbo land to participate in the NECO Exam.

“IPOB has listened to pleas from well-meaning individuals and groups within and outside Biafra land that we consider the fate of our children who will be involved in the NECO Exam and based on that, we decided to shift grounds over the sit-at-home order”.
The statement added that IPOB on its part, having realized the academic deprivation the already marginalized Biafra students who entered for this year’s NECO would suffer, decided to suspend the sit-at-home order to a later date, to allow the students take their exams.
Kanu equally made it clear that allowing the sit-at-home to go ahead as earlier announced, in the face of the NECO Exam would amount to assisting enemies of Biafra to inflict more injuries on her children.
“As a group fighting for the liberation of her people from oppression from her enemies, we realized that it would amount to assisting the said enemies to inflict more harm on our children if we do not suspend the sit-at-home order to allow Biafra students take their exams”.
While making it clear the sit-at-home order has not been cancelled, but only suspended for the sake of Biafra students taking this year’s NECO Exam, the statement called on all IPOB global family members and Biafrans at large to await further directives in this regard.

Nnamdi Kanu never told youths to destroy Nigeria – Lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, a member of the legal team of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has said his client never told youths to destroy Nigeria.

Ejimakor said this on Twitter in reaction to a message he received which states that Kanu gave the order to youths while in the custody of the Department of State Services.

The message read, “Destroy Nigeria when I’m no longer there, my death can’t stop Biafra. I’m just one person out of millions of Biafrans – Nnamdi Kanu urges youths from DSS custody.

“I’ve been starved for three weeks, beaten and electrocuted, yet the more they torture me, the more my spirit gets high. I will die anyway, but Biafra will come.

“The good news of Biafra must be preached anytime, anywhere, without fear or favour.

“I’m here because of Biafra, I’m suffering here because of you. Don’t fail me, don’t disappoint me because, in the end, Biafra will come.”

Reacting, Ejimakor tweeted, “DISCLAIMER: Several persons have sent me the message below, asking if it’s true. Well, my answer is this: It’s NOT TRUE. I met Onyendu several times & he NEVER uttered such words. Pls be guided. Thank you.

Meanwhile, another member of Kanu’s legal team, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has said his client has not received any visit in DSS custody from the British High Commissioner in Nigeria nor anyone representing them.

Ejiofor said this in a statement titled, ‘Clarification On Falsehood Being Circulated Over Various Social Media Platforms.’

He said, “For your information, neither the British High Commissioner in Nigeria nor anyone representing/acting for them has visited Our Client – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at DSS detention facility, where he is currently being held incommunicado. I can authoritatively confirm this position to you today.

“Stop believing the falsehood being dished out in the public space by mischief-makers. The purveyors of fake news have always been at it.

“When I talk about a collaboration between the British Government and those that kidnapped Our Client in Kenya, I meant every word spoken there.

“Thankfully, force of law has been activated through judicial process, before the British Court to ensure that their statutory obligation over their Nationale is asserted, without further ado.

“In this political/media trial of our client, I see a handful of compromised social media platforms, who are ostensibly feeding fat from the National treasury. But the majority of distinguished media houses are guided by good conscience in their reportage.”

IPOB Threatens To Lock Down South East Over Nnamdi Kanu

The outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has threatened  a weekly lockdown of the South East over the detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Daybreak had reported how Kanu, who jumped bail in 2017, was rearrested abroad and brought back to Nigeria.

He is currently in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement on Thursday, one Chika Edoziem described as IPOB’s Head, Directorate of State, said the Federal Government has an 11-day ultimatum to release Kanu to prevent the lockdown.

“The global community knows that self-determination is not a crime, the Nigerian government equally know that self-determination does not constitute any known offence stipulated in their constitution and therefore do not have any case against the leader of IPOB, Mazi Kanu.”

“In recognition of the above fact and truth, the Directorate of State of IPOB, demands herewith an unconditional and immediate release of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on or before the 8th day of August 2021, failing which we shall commence a weekly Lockdown of Biafra land starting from 9th August, 2021.

“For the avoidance of doubt this total lockdown of Biafra land will take place every Monday until our leader is released unconditionally.

“This weekly lockdown is simply one of the measures we shall put in place to ensure that our leader is released hale and hearty,” the statement read.

Edozie issued the threat two days after suspected IPOB militants killed a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) during an exchange of gunfire with policemen in the hometown of Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

  • I’ll stand surety for Nnamdi Kanu again – Sen Abaribe

I’ll stand surety for Nnamdi Kanu again – Sen Abaribe

Senate Minority Leader, Enyinaya Abaribe, has insisted he would stand surety again for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, given the same circumstances.

Abaribe stated this on Wednesday during an interview on a national television.

The lawmaker explained that he stood surety for Kanu, because it was a condition imposed by the court.

According to Abaribe, the court ordered that one of the sureties must be a Senator, and as the Chairman of the Southeast Senators Caucus then, he had to offer himself.

When asked whether Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is now the Chairman of Southeast Caucus, would agree to stand as sure for Kanu should the need arise, Abaribe said he would not know.

Abaribe said: “There is a difference between jumping bail and escaping for your life. I went back to court and deposed that on the basis of the principle of ‘last seen’, that the last people seen with him were soldiers of the Nigerian army who were invading his father’s residence.

“The judge ultimately ruled that she was revoking bail and issued a warrant of arrest, thereby removing us from the responsibility of providing him.”

Abaribe was then asked if he would be willing to stand surety for Kanu again, if the IPOB leader was offered bail.

He replied: “If the circumstances are the same, then why not?

“The first time, the judge said they needed a Senator to be part of his sureties. So if a judge says that again that they need a Senator, I don’t see why I won’t. I am a Senator and I come from the South East.

“We can’t run away from our responsibility. He’s our son. He’s from our state (Abia).”

  • DSS restricts Nnamdi Kanu from signing letter for UK consular assistance – Lawyer

DSS restricts Nnamdi Kanu from signing letter for UK consular assistance – Lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Monday, revealed details of how the Department of State Services, DSS, restricted the agitator from seeking assistance from the United Kingdom, UK.

Ejimakor had revealed that operatives of DSS were delaying Kanu from signing two forms seeking consular and diplomatic intervention from the UK.

The constitutional lawyer disclosed this in a statement he forwarded to DAILY POST entitled: “Summary of my visitation with our Client, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Monday 19th July.”

He noted that the refusal of the secret police to sign the letters he took to them was an indication that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government was determined to isolate Kanu from gaining diplomatic assistance.

The statement reads: “Last Saturday when I visited Mazi Kanu, I expressed strong concerns about the inordinate delay in having Kanu sign the two Forms I had taken to the DSS for Kanu’s signature some days before.

“Both Forms relate to affirming his consent to consular and diplomatic interventions by the United Kingdom and her High Commission in Nigeria.

“Surprisingly, the Forms were returned to me unsigned.”

Ejimakor disclosed that operatives of the secret police were initially willing to allow Kanu sign the forms but later reneged and sent them to their legal unit.

According to Ejimakor, DSS legal department was responsible for the restriction.

“Let me make it clear that the day I took the Forms to the DSS, the officers on location were amenable to Kanu signing them until somewhere along the line, they tarried and decided to send it to the legal unit for vetting.

“So, my sense is that it’s the legal unit of the DSS that disapproved of Kanu signing the Forms for reasons that were not given to me.

“As a lawyer, I don’t see any legal advantage the government of Nigeria stands to gain by blocking Kanu from signing those Forms. The Forms are but a mere routine in matters like this.

“Instead of any advantage, the refusal will help fuel the notion that the government of Nigeria is deliberately isolating Kanu from having consular and diplomatic access to the United Kingdom.”

The lawyer urged the British government to intervene and immediately provide diplomatic assistance to the IPOB leader.

He said: “For these reasons, I am now compelled to call on the British High Commission in Nigeria to banish every red tape and exert the full weight of its diplomatic clout in gaining immediate access to Kanu. This is especially important, given the prospects of better welfare, including adequate medical care for Mazi Kanu.”

Kanu has been in secret police custody since he was rearrested and repatriated to Nigeria a few weeks ago.

It is widely believed that Kanu was nabbed in Kenya, though the Nigerian government has remained silent on it.

Upon his return, the Nigerian government had re-arraigned him before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The Justice Binta Nyako-led court had ordered Kanu to be remanded with the secret police, pending the continuation of his trial.

Kanu was first arrested and charged for treason in 2017. Justice Nyako had granted him bail but he failed to honour his trial afterwards.

The IPOB leader later fled the country to Europe.
