  • Buhari’s failing govt can’t unite Nigeria – Soyinka

Buhari’s failing govt can’t unite Nigeria – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says he doesn’t believe Nigerian unity is attainable under the current regime of President Muhammadu Buhari due to its systemic failure.

Soyinka said this in Abuja on Saturday at the book reading and signing of two of his books titled ‘Trumpism in Academe’ and ‘Chronicles of the Happiest People on Earth’.

Former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State had asked Soyinka if he could write a Nigerian story that would evoke patriotism and inspire unity among the various tribes in the country.

Responding, the playwright said no narrative would unite the people of Nigeria without restitution and justice.

He explained that persons in Internally Displaced Persons’ camps, who had lost relatives and loved ones due to violence, would not embrace any story of unity unless they got justice.

The Nobel laureate said Nigeria had lost a key opportunity to unite, adding that he didn’t believe the regime of Buhari could unite Nigeria because it suffered from systemic failure.

Soyinka added, “We had a critical moment and we lost that moment. The moment when this country could have come together; and the sense of oneness, belonging. That vision of oneness. We lost that moment. There has been more than one moment and we lost the moment. Will another one come? I don’t know. Right now I don’t see it under this government quite frankly.

“There is a failure, a systemic failure in present governance and I don’t know who can put it together. These days, I try to go some days without reading the newspapers. It is so depressing.”

Soyinka said he personally believed that Nigeria should not break up but should remain one entity.

He, however, argued that it was wrong of the government to continue to say the country’s unity was non-negotiable.

  • FG owing Ibeno communities N98B- Monarch

Communities in Ibeno Local Council of Akwa Ibom have demanded for N98 Billion from the Federal Government being penalties for gas flared by oil companies operating in the area.
This is even as stakeholders in the state have expressed reservations in some provisions of the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB,  passed eight years ago but yet to be accented to by President Muhammadu Buhari but which is currently passing through amendment by stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
Paramount Ruler of Ibeno Chief Effiong Achianga told  a town hall meeting with the visiting National Assembly Joint Committee on PIB in Uyo yesterday that oil communities are yet to benefit from the 13% oil derivation to states as governors in the region have arrogated the fund to themselves.
“But the 13% derivation fund is meant for oil bearing communities and not the state but unfortunately these oil communities have most times been marginalized even on money that is meant to be spent on them.” Achianga said.
The Royal Father also expressed reservations over the failure of several states in the Niger Delta including Akwa Ibom to establish the oil minerals producing development commission for oil bearing and impacted communities and called for Federal Government intervention.
Other areas for amendment in the bill as recommended by stakeholders including host communities of Ibeno and Eastern Obollo, the state Assembly and the state government also include the technical return of offshore/onshore oil dichotomy, increase in the stake of host communities in NNPC subsidiaries and in the appointment of members into the Host Community Trust Fund Board of Trustees and Management Committees.
Other concerns raised by stakeholders include payment by host communities for damages to oil facilities during crisis, relocation of oil companies head offfices to their base of operations and non recognition of Oron communities as oil bearing communities.
Chairman of the joint committee, Senator Sabo Naduku in an opening remark regretted that the Bill is yet to be implemented several years after it was passed but expressed the commitment of the the National Assembly towards it’s realization.
Naduku also reminded stakeholders on the dwindling reliance on petroleum as a source of energy even as Nigeria has continued to lose her monopoly for production of oil in the West African region.
State commissioner for power and petroleum development Dr John Etim in a welcome address regretted that the bill has not been able to be signed into law due to political considerations while instead of being useful has left the industry in a sorry state.
“But the state is keen on making contributions to the success and passage of the bill. During the public hearing at the National Assembly recently the state presented a memorandum that concentrated on three basic areas of Environmental Management, Host Community Development and Ownership of the various Incorporated Institutions that the Bill proposes to establish.
“It is also sad to observe that State Governments are excluded from the process of appointing members into the various committees and institutions the Bill intends to establish.” Etim explained.
  • Insecurity: Kaduna Bishop Asks FG to Declare State of Emergency

The Bishop of the Kaduna Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Mathew Ndagoso, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in the country’s security sector and protect the citizens from constant attacks by bandits and other criminal elements.

Bishop Ndagoso said this on Sunday during the one-year remembrance service of a student of the Good Shepherds Catholic Major Seminary in the state, Mike Nnadi who was killed by bandits.

He also criticised the president, saying he has failed woefully in protecting the lives and property of the citizens, contrary to his campaign promises to improve the security of the country.

According to the cleric, the daily abductions and killings of innocent people by bandits, and the inability of the Federal Government led by President Buhari to put an end to the attacks, clearly shows that the president cares less about the welfare of those he is leading.

He also added that the country is at the worse of insecurity under the present administration.

The catholic seminarian and some of his colleagues were abducted by bandits on January 10, 2020.

The gunmen had invaded the school at midnight, shot sporadically to scare students, and thereafter abducted four students from their hostels.

While three of the students were later released by the bandits some days after, the decomposed body of Mike Nnadi was found inside a bush at Kakau village along the Kaduna Kaduna-Abuja highway on February 2, 2020.

Although those behind Nnadi’s death were eventually arrested in April 2020, the Bishop of the Kaduna Diocese, Mathew Mathew Ndagoso, used the occasion to draw the attention of the authorities to the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Buhari Declares war on Bandits, Kidnappers, Criminals

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said there will be no softening of the ongoing measures aimed at tackling insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals constituting a threat to innocent citizens across the country.

The President gave the warning through his Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, during a security meeting of the Northern State Governor’s Forum and traditional rulers in Kaduna State.

President Buhari admitted that the country is battling with different dimensions of security challenges, but added that he has asked the new Service Chiefs to devise new strategies that will end the ugly situation.

Meanwhile, the Northern Governors have resolved to partner with the Federal Government and their Southern counterparts in tackling the challenges.

Thursday’s meeting, which took place at the Kaduna state government house, came barely two weeks after governors of the Northwest zone held a similar meeting with the service Chiefs and the National Security Adviser to discuss ways to address the issue of banditry and kidnapping bedeviling the zone.

Among the governors who attended the meeting were those of Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kano, Katsina, Plateau, as well as the Deputy Governors of Bauchi, Kogi, Zamfara, Benue, and Niger states.

In their opening remarks, the host Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and the Chairman of the forum, Simon Lalong said the meeting was long overdue and crucial for the progress of the North and the country in general.

While El-Rufai urged his colleagues to adopt strategies to forestall all forms of security challenges in the North, Governor Lalong regretted the attacks and killings menacing the region, noting that it is the responsibility of governors and other leaders to find lasting solutions to the problem.

He also described the recent kidnap of school children in Government Science Secondary School, Kagara, Niger State as a wake-up call for leaders and also as a sad reminder of the difficult situation the north is facing.

On the issue of herder-farmer clashes, which has in recent weeks generated serious concerns because of the harsh rhetoric from various parts of the country, Lalong agreed that open grazing is no longer sustainable for obvious reasons.

He also reiterated that the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has keyed into the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP), a veritable option that will go a long way in ending the clashes through organised ranching.

The northern governors also appealed to their colleagues in other parts of the country and all citizens particularly opinion leaders to be cautious in their utterances and actions, warning that such unguided utterances could provide the oxygen for the exploitation of the nation’s fault lines to the detriment of the entire country.

Buhari, a dependable leader, says Akpabio

The Minster of Niger Delta Affairs and former governor of Akwa Ibom , Chief Godswill Akpabio, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as a dependable leader who is genuinely interested in the progress of Niger Delta region and Nigeria.

Akpabio made the claim during the inauguration of the executives of a political support group, Akwa Ibom Democratic Forum (ADF) in Abak local council yesterday.

According to the Minister, Buhari’s commitment and determination towards accelerated development of the Niger Delta as demonstrated in the increased work pace on East/West Road, remained a clear evidence of his commitment to the speedy development of the region.

“Work on the construction of the bridge on the Ikot Abasi/Oruk Anam axis is going on at feverish speed, the bridge would be ready by March, 2021, after which the Oron/Calabar bridge would be the next focus, for the East/West Road to be fully completed.” He said.

He expressed gratitude to the President for being resolute, adding that, by his actions, he has shown himself as a dependable leader.

The inauguration of the group which was performed by the Minister and witnessed by other stakeholders, saw Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo appointed as the Director-General and Arc. Ubokutom Nyah as the Co-Director General.

Akpabio who was unanimously appointed as the Grand Leader for the group said that, he was excited with the motto of the organization which is “Dependable Leadership.

“Dependable Leadership” means dividends of democracy to the people. “Dependable Leadership” means water for the people; “Dependable Leadership” means education for our children. “Dependable Leadership” means an end to COVID-19 or at least, the control of COVID-19. It means the provision of medical care… “Dependable Leadership” means quality infrastructure…”, citing what happened between 2007-2015 in Akwa ibom state as example.

He charged the leadership of Akwa Ibom Democratic Forum (ADF) to demonstrate transparency in leadership, stating that, it was the only known attribute that can enhance the survival of the group.

Earlier, the Director-General of the group, Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo in his address said the Forum has resolved to come together in solidarity to Akpabio’s uncommon and selfless service to humanity with little regard to political affiliation.

According to the former House of Representatives member, the mission of the group was to support, promote and encourage transparent and dedicated leaders like Akpabio as well as correct leaders who derail with a view to ensuring the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the citizenry.

The Forum thanked Mr. President for appointing Akpabio as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs adding that, he possessed enormous untapped potentials to turn things around for the region citing the accomplishments of his past 18 months as Minister including the completion of the Corporate headquarters of NDDC as most commendable.

The group said it has declared 100 percent loyalty to his current and future leadership, stating that, the inauguration of the Forum would kick start the journey of mobilising ardent faithfuls across Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District and across Akwa Ibom State for unwavering support for the Minister.

Reps speaks on apology notice to Buhari after failed invitation

The House of Representatives has reacted to the reports that they apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari or anybody in the Presidency for inviting him to address Nigerians on the growing insecurity in the country.

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu, issued the denial in a statement on Monday, December 28, titled ‘Clarification on Apology to the Presidency.’

Recall that the House had withdrawn its invitation to the President and that those who sponsored the motion calling for Buhari’s invitation had apologised to him.

Kalu, however, faulted the claims in the report.

The statement read, “It has come to the knowledge of the House that few sections of the media reported that the House apologized to the Presidency over the resolution of the House which arose from the motion sponsored by members from Borno State, requesting for the invitation of the President to brief the nation on the state of insecurity in the country.

“The President or the Presidency, as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of Representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate.

”Where then did the media get the report that the House as an institution apologise to anyone? Media professionals are advised to uphold the ethics of their profession.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House never apologised to anyone for exercising her constitutional mandate and the 9th Assembly of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila will not do anything to desecrate or destroy the critical institution of democracy – the Legislature.

”We strongly believe that President Muhammadu Buhari subscribes to this democratic ethos and ideals as well.”
