Amotekun Arrests 45 Suspected Kidnappers, Rapists, Armed Robbers in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network known as Amotekun, has arrested 45 suspected criminals for various offences in the state.

The Amotekun Corps Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Wednesday, September 21, in Akure while parading the suspects before journalists.

According to him, the suspects were involved in various criminal offences which include kidnapping, armed robbery, stealing, snatching of motorbikes, rape among others.

Adeleye also said in its efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents, the corps had begun a 24-hour patrol in the Northern Senatorial District of the state and other parts.

“As we speak now, we have put measures in place to ensure that our roads are safe from the hands of criminals, our patrol vehicles are moving round for 24 hours,” he said.

“We want to reassure the good people of Ondo State to go about their normal duties. Again, the enforcement of the ban on the use of ‘Okada’ in the night was also one of the major things responsible for the downward trend of criminal activities in the state generally.”

“Today is another major harvest of criminals operating within the Ondo State; a couple of weeks ago, we deployed additional hands to all the 18 local government areas to assist in beefing up the security architecture and it has actually yielded a lot of results.

“Within the last two weeks, we have 45 criminals that we have concluded their investigations and they are ready to go for prosecution,” he said.

Mr Adeleye said there was a case of Okoye Chukwuma, who specialised in burgling cocoa stores.

“We also have one Philip Jacob who specialised in vandalising vehicles parked in mechanic workshops overnight.”

He said that in Ore, a family was kidnapped and his men moved there immediately and were able to arrest the kidnappers and release the victims.

“We also have those that are regular in house breaking in the midnight, they have the ways of opening doors and silently entering to molest innocent people and dispossess them of their valuables.

“The trend of crimes in Ondo state is now seriously coming down, as far as we are concerned. We are impressed by the safety of lives and property of citizens in the state.

”If you look at the Akure Metropolis, all major junctions are manned by the security operatives and we are trying more to patrol within all 18 local government areas of the state,” he added.

NAPTIP to publish names, photos of rapists

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has urged Nigerians to report cases of rape within their vicinity to the agency or the nearest police station.

It said the names and photos of sex offenders in the country would soon be published.

NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, made this known on Thursday in Abuja following the rising cases of rape in the country.

According to her, reporting cases of rape is the only way to curtail the abominable act, adding that the agency will act on reported cases.

She said, “Rapists are now getting away with their illicit acts along with murder; these cases of domestic servitude are cases that take place behind closed doors.

“Our job in NAPTIP is to protect Nigerian men and women, we are not going to compromise our work if they report such cases and we will ensure justice is done.

“Rape cases are not reported because of stigmatisation of the victims and this makes the cases rise. And very soon, the names of rapists will be published with their pictures in the media.”

Okah-Donli said the Sex Offenders’ Register had already been opened in the agency where the names of rape perpetrators were documented for further actions.

Osun speaker reminds rapists of life sentence

The Speaker of Osun House of Assembly,Mr Timothy Owoeye, on Thursday restated that anyone found guilty of rape in the state would be liable to life imprisonment after conviction.

Owoeye, during plenary, said it was becoming alarming, the growing rate of rape cases in the country and that it was an issue that must be addressed by all.

He said hard times awaited rapists in the state, as Osun would not tolerate rape, saying that the Director of Legal of the House of Assembly henceforth would be present at all rape-related cases in Osun courts.

He said, “Osun is blessed to have enacted a law that imposes stiffer sentences on perpetrators of rape.

“Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11, Laws of Osun state, 2002 prescribes a life sentence on anyone found guilty of committing rape, while an attempt to commit rape attracts an imprisonment of fourteen years.

“I have taken my time to study the anti-rape laws across the country. I have also met with several groups who are at the fore-front of the campaign against rape.

“While praying to God to repose the soul of victims of rape, I stand with those who are alive and hope that the victims get justice.

“I am well aware of the two recent cases in our state, the one involving a traditional ruler who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and a 27 year old man who was arraigned for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.

“I want to charge our law enforcement agencies to diligently prosecute cases of rape.

“With too many instances, we must begin to hold people accountable no matter how highly placed.”

In a related development, the assembly has passed the Osun Youth Development Commission establishment bill 2020, which enables youths in the state to participate in government activities.

Owoeye, during the passage of the bill, said when it is assented to by the governor, it would enhance and encourage active participation of youths in policy making, youth-related programmes as well as other important government activities.

He also said the bill, when passed into law, would harness and develop the full potentials of the youths in the state as partners in development and progress.
