    ECOWAS, Red Cross Donate Relief Materials to Katsina Flood Victims

    The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has donated relief materials to flood victims in Katsina State.

    Items donated to the victims of the natural disaster in Bindawa Local Government Area (LGA), of the state includes 100 bags of rice, 100 bags of millets, 100 bags of beans, 200 gallons of palm and vegetable oil.

    Others were 200 set of blankets, 300 set of underwear, 100 pieces of bathroom slippers, 400 sets of cups, buckets and detergents as well as 700 sets of towels, sanitary pads, mats and soaps.

    Distributing the items to the 100 adversely affected victims in Bindawa Saturday, the Katsina Executive Chairman of Nigerian Red Cross Society, Aliyu Idris, said the gesture would assuage the suffering of the vulnerable persons.

    He affirmed that aside the food and non-food items donated to the beneficiaries, ECOWAS and Red Cross in synergy with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs had commenced the renovation of 12 houses affected by the 2020 flood.

    While noted that four boreholes have also been renovated in the area, Idris explained that the state branch of Nigerian Red Cross Society has trained 2,000 members as first aiders and provided basic first aid training for regular Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Commission in the state.

    In addition, he said, over 500 volunteers across the state have received emergency training in disaster management, adding that the society also treated 610,809 first aid cases and referred 8,715 cases to appropriate health institutions.

    Earlier, the ECOWAS representative, Aminu Abubakar, warned the beneficiaries against selling the donated items, saying anyone caught would face the wrath of the law.

    Nigeria Red Cross (NRC) tracked over twenty thousand children for immunization, trained over 150 Community first aiders on how to manage accident case in Nasarawa in 2019.

    The State Executive Secretary of the Red Cross in Nasarawa state, Jerry Danjuma Kuje disclosed this in an exclusive interview with our Correspondent in Lafia, Nasarawa state Capital Thursday.

    He said over 40,000 volunteers have been engaged on data base while 50 of the red Cross in the state are not on data base. in Nasarawa

    According to Danjuma Kuje, Red Cross Nigeria was first to open COVID19 isolation centre at the wake of the pandemic without support from any quarters even as the organization is humanitarian in nature, carried out evacuation of accident victims in the state.

    The Organization according to the Secretary runs an ambulance services, participate in measles campaigns, immunization activities in view of the it’s prevalence.

    The secretary identified lack of funds as one of the factors militating against it operation in the state appealed to the state government to assist the organization to enable it carry out it’s humanitarian services effectively in the state.

    According to him, NRC was in need of a relief store to guarantee the storage and safety of its materials stating that the activities of the red Cross in Nasarawa state were being hindered people have refused to identify with the organization.

    He further appealed to spirited individuals, organizations to assist red Cross in the state render it’s statutory services to humanity in the state.

    Nigerian Red Cross partners Foundation to train vulnerable youths for 25 years

    The Nigerian Red Cross Society on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understating with Bamanga Tukur Foundation to cater for vulnerable Nigerians in the next 25 years.

    Mr Abubakar Kende, Secretary General of the society said in Abuja during the signing that the collaboration would enhance and strengthen the services of the organisations in the country.

    Kende said that the International Red Cross Movement has seven fundamental principles with the first as humanity, and that the society and the foundation had so many things in common.

    “The society is a global voluntary, humanitarian movement, with over 13 million volunteers and staff in 192 countries, which seeks to alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found.

    “The foundation promotes education, healthcare, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and good governance among the people of Nigerian regardless of creed or ethnicity.

    “This is where the vision of these two organisation collapses into humanity and voluntary service,’’ Kende said.

    According to him, in the last three years the society’s 80 per cent intervention has been from international community.

    He said that with the partnership it would attract more organisations to help reduce the suffering of Nigerian youths.

    Kende said that during the COVID-19 pandemic the society engaged a lot of communities to give hope to 2,583 households across 12 states with cash transfer programme.

    He said that the society and other partners would provide humanitarian support to victims of flood disaster in 16 states.

    Dr Mohammed Nasidi, the Executive Director of the foundation, said that the priority of the foundation was education.

    Nasidi said that in order to achieve its focus it needed to partner the society to get to the grassroots.

    He said that the foundation had planned to train 200 people in Adamawa to equip them for jobs.

    Nasidi said that the society would help the foundation in the area of health as it had experts in health area to achieve higher goals.

    Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a business mogul and former Minister of Industry, said the partnership would help the foundation to invest more in the area of education.

    Tukur said, “we will be able to assist each other to make the world a better place.’’

    COVID-19: Red Cross plans door-to-door sensitisation in Kaduna

    Kaduna State Red Cross Society on Friday said it would begin a door-to-door sensitisation as a measure to tackle the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

    The State Communication coordinator, Mr Peter Ochu, said this in an interview in Kaduna.

    Ochu explained that the state branch had identified lack of proper information about spread of the virus as one of the factors militating against total compliance to the lockdown, social distancing and sanitary measures.

    “As COVID-19 continues to bite hard and causing nations to lock down, the necessity for humanitarian intervention in the area of sensitising the populace about the deadly virus cannot be over- emphasised.

    “We want to embark on a door to door sensitisation for residents to safeguard their health and comply with the stay at home rules by the government.

    Ochu said that the Kaduna Red Cross Emergency and First Aid Team are on standby in case of any emergencies.

    “We will continue to sensitise the people through different media in spite of the lockdown.

    “The branch secretary has put in place modalities to embark on door-to-door sensitisation throughout this period and beyond to enlighten the people on measures to stay safe from the virus,” Ochu said.

    According to him, the sensitisation will be led by the health Coordinator, Mr Aminu Aliyu, and the Branch acting disaster management coordinator, Mr Stanley Asukwo.

    Ochu said the organisation would distribute educational pamphlets to households and individuals on measures to improve on their hygiene.

    “Social distancing and hand washing demonstrations will be part of the sensitisation which will kick off in Kaduna metropolis next week.

    “The Branch Chairman Elder Sunday Oibe is making plans to support other branches through the National Headquarters with IEC materials to enable them to begin same exercise in other LGAs in the state,” he said.

    He appealed to individuals and organisations to assist the state Red Cross with safety materials like hand gloves and sanitisers among others for it to reach out to more households in the state.
