    I took part in robbery to raise money for my pregnant wife, says suspect

    A 41-year-old robbery suspect, Sunkanmi Adeoye, has revealed that he went into the crime to get fund to purchase baby things for his pregnant wife.

    Adeoye, who was arrested alongside Kamurudeen Kadiri, aged 30 and Owoseni Adekunle, 27, said Aro got him involved in the operation after he complained to him that he needed cash to take care of his pregnant wife and also purchase baby items as his wife will soon deliver.

    Adeoye said: “Aro told me we were going for a robbery operation and I agreed to be part of it because he assured me that I will get money from it. I am a photographer but I needed help.

    “I didn’t know them before the robbery operation. This was our first child; my wife doesn’t know that I have been arrested.”

    It was gathered that the trio are members of an interstate robbery syndicate that specialised in snatching and selling stolen cars in Lagos, Ondo and Ogun states.

    The three suspects were arrested on August 31 around the Berger area in Lagos while trying to sell a metallic grey-coloured Toyota Corolla car they stole in Ondo State. However, the leader of the gang is still at large.

    Speaking on how he got involved in the robbery, 27-year-old Owoseni Adekunle said: “I started stealing and selling people’s generators. I made between N15,000 and N20,000 each time I stole and sold a generator. From there I began to steal and sell cocoa.

    “I don’t drink, smoke or womanise, I used the proceed I made from petty stealing to feed. I am a tiler but I hardly get jobs.”

    Confirming their arrest, the spokesperson of Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said an investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.

    The Yobe State Police says it has arrested three suspects, including a soldier, for criminal conspiracy, house breaking and armed robbery.

    The suspects were said to have invaded the Damaturu residence of one Hajiya Aisha Usman of Sabon-Pegi-ward at midnight.

    Armed with deadly weapons, including an AK 47 rifle, the suspects were said to have carted away the sum of N250,000 cash, 307 Peugeot saloon car and Nokia handset belonging to the victim.

    In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of Yobe command, ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, said the suspects have inflicted serious injuries on the victim and her son, Ahmed Umar, aged 17 years after tying them up with satelite cable wire

    Lagos, Ogun residents lament rising robbery cases

    Barely 14 days after the lockdown order by President Muhammadu Buhari to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun State, some boundary communities between Lagos and Ogun States are living in fear, as hoodlums have been robbing people of their money, food items and other valuables.

    Ifo, is a Local Government Area in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria. Its headquarters is located in Ifo town, which is few kilometres away from Lagos.

    It has an area of 521 km² and a population of more than 500,000 people, according to the 2006 census.

    For many years, the area, which shares boundary with Lagos, has suffered various neglects, including insecurity.

    Recently, a hash tag Ogun unrest, was created on social media, to draw public attention to the plight of residents of the area.

    Though, a lot of misinformation were detected on the thread, the fact remains that there are group of boys who were threats to the peace of the neighbourhood.

    Broken bottles, damaged tiles and bornfire were seen on the streets of the communities in Lagos, sharing boundary with Ifo local government Area.

    Most affected areas are Ifako-Ijaiye, Agbado crossing, Oke-Aro, Akute, Olambe, Ijoko, Ogbaayo, Ajegunle Iroko among others.

    These communities, which play host to several factories, seem not safe for many reaidents who live here.

    Our Crew met with Adunni Osundairo, who narrated how her home was invaded by some hoodlums. She was devasted by the incident.

    ” I believe there is an increased number of robbery attacks, because of the lockdown. Government should increase the stimulus package we can’t sleep anymore”

    Another victim of the robbery incident, who profers name not mentioned, said: “They walk in groups, as much as 30 to 50 boys at the same time. They have been robbing the community before now. It started at about 5 months ago. They are underaged boys, between 14 and 20 years old. For more than 3 days, we have been staying awake between 7pm to 6am.”

    Though, people living in the communities are scared of being robbed or abused, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, during a patrol in the area, assured residents of maximum security.

    As residents of Ifo local government area await more attention from Lagos and Ogun state governments, there is the need for urgent intervention in the security situation of the area.

    But for safety of people around the border communities to be guaranteed, the sit-at-home order must be adhered to, as movement especially at night, might be dangerous.

    Police arrest 2 suspects at robbery scene in FCT

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday said it arrested two suspects at a robbery scene in Pegi community in Kuje Area Council.

    The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Mariam Yusuf disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

    She said two victims of the robbery incident died following deep machete wounds inflicted on them by the suspects.

    Yusuf said the information being circulated in the social media that four persons were killed by bandits/Kidnappers in Pegi area was not true.

    According to her, the suspects were arrested at the scene of the robbery by police operatives attached to Pegi Division.

    She said the arrest followed swift response to a distress call from Gbogu Village along Kabi Mangoro road in Pegi area on Sunday.

    “Police operatives attached to Pegi Division were instantly deployed to the scene where they apprehended the two suspects and disarmed them,” she said.

    She said that efforts were being made to arrest one of the suspects, currently at large.

    Yusuf said that the Commissioner of Police in Charge of FCT, Mr Bala Ciroma had ordered discreet investigation into the incident.

    She said the command commiserate with the families of the deceased and called on residents to remain calm.

    Yusuf pledged the commitment of the command to protect lives and property in the FCT. (NAN)
