Although the six Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt is yet to release an official statement, two top security personnel in Rivers State confirmed the attack and killings to Channels Television.

This attack comes barely 24 hours after gunmen killed some police and customs officers at their patrol base in Isiokpo, the Headquarters of Ikwerre Local Government, which is along the Port Harcourt-Owerri road.

While the Police are yet to reveal the casualty figure for Saturday night’s attack in Isiokpo, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) had said three of its personnel were killed by the gunmen.

The spokesperson for Zone C, Custom’s Federal Operations Unit, Mr Jerry Atta, told Channels Television on Sunday that the gunmen also went away with an AK-47 rifle and two Toyota Hilux vans belonging to the service.

He said a thorough investigation would be carried out to unravel the circumstances that led to the attack and to unravel the motive of the assailants.

Atta blamed the killing of the security operatives on armed smugglers whose businesses have been frustrated by the customs in recent times.

The incident took place at the early hours of Friday in Baka village of Ardo-Kola Local Government Council of the state.

The affected youths remains have been deposited in the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre which is located in Jalingo metropolis. They were said to be returning from a wedding ceremony when they met their untimely deaths in the hands of the soldiers.

The soldiers who were in the community to checkmate the activities of hoodlums terrorizing the state, were said to have mistaken the youths for kidnappers.

Some of the parents who spoke with our correspondents could not fathom why the soldiers opened fire on the youths on sighting them on motorcycles instead of arresting them.

One of the parents who gave his name as Bello Aliyu Jen, told our correspondent that two of his sons were among the five youths killed by the soldiers.

He gave the names of his deceased sons as Abdulkadir Bello -27 and Tukur Bello-20. According to him, Abdulkadir was a final year HND student of the College of Agriculture, Jalingo.

Passionately calling on the government to do the needful by bringing the soldiers to book, he said his dream had been shattered as his sons who according to him have been working round the clocks to put smiles on his face are “no more”.

Other affected parents who also spoke with DAILY POST at the hospital sought to know why the soldiers on sighting the youths from a distance decided to open fire on them, instead of arresting and interrogating them to ascertain their missions.

Our state correspondent who was at the hospital as at the time the remains of the deceaseds were brought in observed that their bodies were rattled with bullets.

A top security personnel who spoke with our correspondent at the hospital scene apportioned blames to parents who according to him always allow their children and wards to “go out at late hours. ”

The deputy speaker of the State House of Assembly, Harman Adama, who was also sighted at the hospital premises confirmed that two of his first cousins were among the five youths that were gunned down by the soldiers.

The Deputy Speaker who observed that the incident occurred during the dead hours of the day cautioned parents and guardians to always tread extra legitimate miles to prevent their children and ward from going out of their houses at late hours.

According to him, the soldiers who have been given presidential directives to flush out hoodlums from the state and the country at large have said their actions were not intentional.

  • Reps Confirms Mass Resignation In Army, Seek Improved Welfare For Soldiers

Reps Confirms Mass Resignation In Army, Seek Improved Welfare For Soldiers

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, confirmed that 386 soldiers resigned from the Nigerian Army in the second quarter of 2020, “which is well over the 365 figures previously assumed”.

The House, however, stated that the resignations were not related to the ongoing war against insurgency in the North-East.

The House of Representatives has called for improved welfare for troops and effective delivery of welfare packages across the ranks.

This was the position of the lawmakers during plenary on Tuesday at the lower chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja.

They made the call following the consideration of the findings and recommendations of a report of the House Committee on Army.

A total of 356 troops of the Nigerian Army were reported to have resigned from the service in July 2020, a development that sparked controversy from various quarters.

The soldiers were said to have tendered their resignations at the time because they had lost interest in the job due to poor welfare and claims that the army was not well equipped to battle insurgents.

This caught the attention of the lawmakers who deliberated on the matter and mandated the House Committee on Army to carry out a thorough investigation on July 14, 2020.

Seven months after the directive, the committee submitted its report after concluding its investigation into the mass resignation of the soldiers.

While presenting the report of the committee, the Chairman of the committee, Abdulrazak Namdas, stated that it was not new for such resignations to happen as it occurred almost annually in the military.

He explained that the recommendations of the report were based on the fact that the soldiers that resigned were mostly citing poor welfare as being the main reason for wanting to leave the service of the army.

The lawmaker stressed the need for the Nigerian government to ensure military personnel were well motivated to defend the nation’s territory and overcome security threats – home or abroad.

Part of the recommendations of the report read, “That the Nigerian Army should improve on the welfare of its personnel, especially those in battlefields or other combat operations to further make the soldiers more committed to their jobs and to the nation at large.

“That there should be effective monitoring or follow up in the delivery of the welfare packages in all the army formations to ensure that they reach out to all the beneficiaries (the soldiers) in a fair and equitable manner.

“That the army should continuously embark on orientation of soldiers – both old and new – about the reality of their jobs and the need to be committed to their country. This will reduce the number of soldiers leaving the army due to loss of interest.”

According to the report, the number of disengagements is far lower than the enlistment in the army in the last five years.

It stated that about 6,752 personnel were disengaged and 25,655 were enlisted, adding that not all the soldiers who voluntarily resigned were actively involved in combat operations.

  • Army Refuses To Release Bodies Of Soldiers Killed By Boko Haram To Families, Plans ‘Secret’ Burial In Borno

Army Refuses To Release Bodies Of Soldiers Killed By Boko Haram To Families, Plans ‘Secret’ Burial In Borno

The Nigerian Army will on Tuesday give soldiers recently killed on the front in the fight against insurgency a ‘secret and undignified burial’, multiple military sources

About three soldiers were killed on Friday when the insurgents engaged the military in a four-hour battle to take control of Dikwa town in Borno State.

The attack happened few hours after Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai handed over to Major General Ibrahim Attahiru as the Chief of Army Staff.

The gun battle, which started around 6:00pm and lasted till around 10:00pm, claimed many casualties, including soldiers.

On January 22, 2021, the group ambushed and fired machine guns at a Nigerian army patrol in Borno State, killing seven soldiers and injuring others. Also, an ATV and ammunition were captured by the gunmen.

The attack occurred barely five days after the gunmen activated seven IEDs against a Nigerian Army convoy of Armoured Personnel Carriers and other vehicles, escorted by a foot patrol in Gorgi in Borno State.

According to military sources, over 30 soldiers were killed during the ambush. The gunmen also destroyed three vehicles and an armoured vehicle.

However, a major in the army told our Reporters that plans had been concluded by the military authorities to conduct a ‘secret’ burial on Tuesday for some of the dead soldiers whose bodies are still in the mortuary.

He accused the army authorities of failing to open up on the fate of fallen soldiers to their families.

“They will be buried on Tuesday at a cemetery here in Maiduguri. Unfortunately, the military failed to open up on the fates of most of these fallen soldiers to their families. The army authorities have yet to inform families of some of these dead soldiers who they plan to bury tomorrow, how will you bury someone whose family members think is still alive? Even those that were informed were not given the bodies of their loved ones,” he said.

A brother of one of the dead soldiers told SaharaReporters that the family got to know about his death from his colleague as the army authorities initially failed to inform them.

He said, “The army initially didn’t inform us. It was one of his colleagues that told me he had been killed by Boko Haram, so I spoke to someone from our town who is a major general, I think he made some moves. So we got a call from them on Saturday night informing us he is dead. Imagine, without his colleague telling us, we wouldn’t have been aware at all.

“So we asked them the process to move his corpse back home for burial but they told us they wouldn’t release his body to us. We explained to them it’s a taboo in our village to be buried in a foreign land but they insisted his body would not be released to us. It was later they informed us that his next of kin and one other family member should come to Maiduguri cause he would be buried on Tuesday.”

In 2019, a US newspaper, Wall Street Journal reported how the military had been secretly dumping the remains of soldiers killed by Boko Haram in unmarked mass graves.

The paper quoted families of fallen servicemen as saying that the military was untidy in its handling of the tragic deaths of their loved ones.

It said on the eve of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno, army commanders secretly moved corpses of soldiers from a morgue to unmarked graves.

“When President Buhari visited the Maiduguri base in November, commanders rushed to bury bodies they had collected at the morgue from the recent attack on the base in Metele and several others, according to several soldiers at the base,” the report read.

“They moved the bodies from the morgue into the unmarked graves under cover of darkness.”

A soldier was quoted as saying: “We could see the headlamps and the torches of the engineering division digging the graves.”

Another round of #EndSARS protests, armed police officers and soldiers were on Monday spotted at the Lekki toll gate, Lagos.

According to different Twitter users, the security operatives were deployed around midnight.

The Lagos State Police Command had on Sunday in a statement by its spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, threatened that “security agencies will not fold their arms” as youths plan fresh protests against police brutality and extortion.

The statement was issued after a poster, titled “#EndSARS reloaded phase II” went viral on social media.

It was stated in the poster that the “phase II” of the #EndSARS protest would begin on Monday, December 7 in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Delta, and Bayelsa.

The demands of the protesters are “Buhari, Buratai, Sanwo-Olu must resign and face ICC for killing innocent Nigerians at Lekki toll; free all #EndSARS protesters; unfreeze all bank accounts of #EndSARS protesters and referendum.”

In October, many citizens took to the streets across Nigeria to express their frustration against police harassment.

However, hoodlums hijacked the demonstrations to unleash violence on citizens. Public and private properties were looted and destroyed in the process.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, a source, who works in the Lekki area of Lagos, confirmed the heavy presence of police and soldiers at the toll gate plaza.

The source, however, said no protester had gathered around the area.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have continued to tweet on #ENDSARS on social media, calling for an end to bad governance and police brutality. Old videos of the protests held in Abuja and Lagos are being circulated online with the hashtag.
