    FG Fully Reopens Third Mainland Bridge

    The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said that the Third Mainland Bridge will be fully reopened today after rehabilitation works.

    Fashola made the announcement on Saturday via Twitter.The Federal Government had partially shut the Third Mainland Bridge on July 24, 2020 for another round of rehabilitation.

    The series of repairs, expected to last six months, was extended from January to February because of the #EndSARS protests.

    The construction was initially divided into two phases of three months on each carriageway, starting with the Oworonsoki-bound carriageway whose completion dragged to four months.

    Traffic was partially diverted on a stretch of 3.5km where construction was on-going between Adeniji Adele Ramp and Ebute Meta, while different time belts were allotted for traffic diversions on the bridge.

    The Third Mainland Bridge will be shut down for three days for another round of delicate expansion joints replacement.

    Federal Controller of Works Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola who made the announcement on Wednesday January 27 said the closure will help concrete set properly during the curing process’ to make the rehabilitation work perfectly and durable.

    Popoola said stoppage of movements that could cause vibrations will help to achieve this. The bridge will be closed from 12:00 midnight of Friday 29th till midnight of Monday 1st February 2021.

    He said;

    “Messers Boroni Prono is planning to cast three number expansion joints on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st.

    ” This will require total closure of Third Mainland bridge from 12:00 midnight of Friday 29th till midnight of Monday 1st February 2021.

    “We are sorry for the inconveniences this may cause Lagosians.”

    The Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola has confirmed that the third mainland bridge will be fully reopened to traffic by February 15.

    The Minister gave the update on Thursday during an inspection of construction work on major roads and bridges in Lagos State.

    The Minister and his team visited the section of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway engulfed by fire when a petrol tanker burst into flames.

    According to Fashola, a former Lagos State Governor, the partial closure of the third mainland bridge is delaying the scheduled maintenance on Falomo bridge.

    “Once the third mainland bridge is reopened, we will move to Falomo bridge and replace the expansion joints,” he said.

    The third mainland bridge has been partially shut since July 24 for repair works.

    The bridge had been scheduled to reopen fully in January. But two weeks lost to the #EndSARS protests necessitated a push in the completion date, according to the Ministry of Works and its contractors.

    The bridge is reputed to be the busiest, in terms of vehicular traffic, in the country.

    The Federal Controller of Works Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, says the total shutdown of the Third Mainland Bridge would be lifted on Sunday, December 27.

    Popoola told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos that the total shutdown had to be lifted because the contractor was able to fast-track the delicate task they needed to execute.

    He said that the initially scheduled 72 hours timeframe was achieved within 48 hours, hence the reopening to traffic 24 hours ahead of schedule.

    “We have completed the casting of the three number expansion joints on Third Mainland bridge.

    “Therefore, the bridge shall be opened at 12:00 midnight Sunday 27th December, and no longer Monday 28th December.

    “That is 48 hours and no more 72 hours,” Popoola said.

    The controller had on Tuesday, December 22 announced a 72 hours total shutdown of the bridge with effect from midnight on Saturday to midnight Tuesday.

    The shutdown was to stop vibrations caused by the movement of vehicles for contractors to cast concrete on additional three expansion joints in the ongoing rehabilitation of the bridge.

    NAN reports that the Third Mainland Bridge which was going through a series of repairs had to be partially shut on July 24 for another round of rehabilitation works.

    The repair that was expected to last six months was extended by one month due to the recent #EndSARS protests in Lagos, thereby extending the completion date from January 2021 to February.

    Popoola who was speaking in Lagos on Sunday said that the total closure had to be lifted because the contractor was able to fast-track the delicate task they needed to execute.

    He said that the initially scheduled 72 hours timeframe was achieved within 48 hours, hence the reopening to traffic 24 hours ahead of schedule.

    The controller had earlier announced on Tuesday, December 22 a 72 hours total closure of the bridge starting at midnight on Christmas day till the midnight of 29th December for casting works to be completed on the bridge.

    The shutdown was to stop vibrations caused by the movement of vehicles for contractors to cast concrete on additional three expansion joints in the ongoing rehabilitation of the bridge.

    Lagos Third Mainland Bridge to be closed this weekend

    The first phase rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge has been completed and the federal government has announced a planned 18-hour total closure of the bridge this weekend.

    The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukayode Popoola, explained the closure was necessary, so that debris would be cleared from the section completed and construction would move to the Island-bound carriageway.

    The 18-hour closure would begin from midnight on Saturday through Sunday. By midnight of Sunday, the total closure would be removed and the partial closure would return.

    “The diversions will still be at the same previous points.

    “Work is to commence on the Island-bound lane of the bridge with the partial closure of Adekunle to Adeniji Adele Phase B.

    “The repair work is to commence between 22nd of November, 2020 and 22nd of February, 2021 for a duration of three months,” he said.

    FG announces three-day closure of Third Mainland Bridge

    A section of Third Mainland Bridge will be completely shut down for three days for repair works.

    The Federal Government announced this in a statement on Wednesday by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Joshua Popoola.

    The statement noted that the total closure of the section of the bridge will start from midnight of Friday.

    He explained that the repair works on the bridge had reached a stage where there should not be any form of movement or vibration on the bridge for concrete casting.

    Part of the statement read, “The first total closure of the section of the bridge between Adekunle and Adeniji Adele will be from midnight of Friday, 9th October 2020 to midnight of Sunday, 11th October 2020 to allow the contractor complete the first stage of casting works.

    “The contractor, Messrs Borini Prono & Co. (Nig.) Ltd is nearing completion of works on the closed section of Third Mainland Bridge and requires the total closure of both bounds of the bridge between Adeniji Adele and Adekunle (i.e. in addition to the closed bound of the bridge, the other bound from Adekunle to Adeniji Adele will also be closed) to complete work.

    “The total closure of this section of the bridge is to ensure that there is no vibration on the bridge during the casting in-place of the newly installed expansion joints. This is to allow for the setting of the special concrete, which allows the concrete to achieve its required compressive strength.

    The Lagos Third Mainland Bridge will be shut down for scheduled maintenance by the Federal Ministry of Works.

    Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said maintenance of the busiest bridge in the country was to replace damaged components for better motoring experience.

    According to him, the maintenance work will last from July 2020 to January 2021.
