Consensus : We Recommended Tinubu, Amaechi, Fayemi, Umahi, Osinbajo – Northern Govns

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have recommended Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ex-Transportation Minister, Rotimi Ameachi, Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) as possible consensus candidates.

Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Simon Lalong disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, saying the APC is looking at the possibility of a consensus candidate.

“From our own recommendations, as of this morning, we recommended five people. In alphabetical order, we said Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, John Kayode Fayemi, David Umahi and Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Those are the ones we made recommendations and we said we should put them forward,” he stated.

“Consensus is possible. Right from yesterday up till today, we have been doing consultations like Mr President said, ‘I give you the opportunity, work on it.’

“The governors and the National Working Committee will continue on that consensus. As of yesterday, we were able to even reduce, made recommendations of about five persons, from 23 to recommendations of about 13 aspirants without disqualifying anybody.”

“Within that 13 aspirants that were graded by the Screening Committee, we now looked at it and then recommended, that was jointly done by the Progressive governors and members of the National Working Committee, reducing it to five.”

Lalong’s comments come a day after the APC’s NWC as well as the 19 northern governors insisted on the emergence of a southerner as Nigeria’s next President.

APC National Organising Secretary, Suleiman Argungu, had made this known on Monday while addressing reporters at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

While briefing reporters in the company of some members of the NWC, he explained that the committee took the decision following a meeting of its members.

According to Argungu, the NWC stands with the position of the northern governors elected on the APC platform for power to shift to the southern part of the country when President Muhammadu Buhari completes his eight-year two terms billed to lapse in May 2023.

He made the remarks amid reports by several media outfits that a presidential hopeful and Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, had emerged as the party’s consensus candidate for the forthcoming poll.

‘I see danger’ — Fayose writes Tinubu An Open Letter

Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, has written an open letter to Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor, over the latter’s recent remarks in Ogun state.

While addressing delegates in Abeokuta, the Ogun capital, Tinubu, a presidential hopeful and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had said without him, Buhari would not have won the presidential election in 2015.

The comment sparked varied reactions from Nigerians on the circumstances surrounding the 2015 elections.

The presidency, in a reaction on Monday, also said millions of people — not one person — supported Buhari to win the election.

In the letter on Monday, Fayose said his views are from the perspective of a Yoruba man and not as a politician, adding that “I equally wish to state that I am not an APC man and will never be”.

“I am writing based on my observed views and the attached possible dangers about your good-self against tomorrow,” the letter reads.

“I equally read the reactions of your political allies both in the North and in the South. The reactions gave me great cause of concern for you and your life. Again, I see danger!

“As a knowledgeable student of history whom you are; our great late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the celebrated winner of the June 12, 1993 general election; Alhaji Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, were led to the Golgotha by self acclaimed “champions of democracy.” I am sure the same people may advise you to ignore my advice.

“Going by the handwritings that are now clearly on the wall, if I may comment sir, I see you as one that may be swimming against the political tide of the cabal in your party. They are equally preparing for your actions and reactions and are fully set to contain same as they did to both Awolowo and Abiola.

“Unfortunately, your kingdom has been badly balkanized if what happened in Abeokuta is anything to go by.”

Fayose, therefore, advised Tinubu to consider a verse in the Bible — “Proverbs 22:3” — which states: “Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it but unthinking people will work into it.”

“Again, Asiwaju, for reasons of not being misrepresented, I will like to stop here and allow you to take your decisions, good or bad as a wise full-grown adult whom you are,” he added.

“No doubt, VP Yemi Osinbajo presents an intimidating credential that can guarantee electoral success for the APC in the presidential elections,” the statement stressed.

“We therefore appeal to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders to rally support for the presidential aspiration of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, in the overall interest of the party and our nation, Nigeria.

The group added that it has followed with keen interest, the presidential aspiration of Osinbajo and his efforts at reaching out to stakeholders nationwide on his presidential ambition.

It further pointed out that the Vice President’s commitment to ensuring sustainable growth and development in the Nation cannot go unnoticed.

It also noted that Osinbajo, at this time, has served as a bridge-builder, desirous of one Nigeria.

The group therefore advised the APC leader and other presidential aspirants to throw their weight behind Osinbajo, to emerge as the President in 2023.

The group argued that by doing so, the aspirants would unite the south, ahead of the 2023 elections.

It added that the level of support the vice president has garnered over the past two weeks of consultation across the nation speaks volume of his level of acceptance by Nigerians.

2023: I don’t owe anybody allegiance – Osinbajo speaks on betraying Tinubu

The Vice President and 2023 Presidential aspirant, Yemi Osinbajo, has said he owes nobody any allegiance.

Osinbajo said he owes no single individual any allegiance outside his oath of office and the allegiance he swore to Nigerians when he came into office in 2015.

He disclosed this during his political consultations in Ogun State on Tuesday.

Addressing his followers, Osinbajo said: “After all, I have learnt, if called upon to serve the nation, should I say No? I have decided that I will run for office.

“I have sworn an oath to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is an oath to our people, our children, and the future of Nigeria. I owe nobody else any allegiance outside the oath.”

  • Tinubu Would be Handed the Presidential Ticket if he was a PDP Member – Bala Mohammed

Tinubu Would be Handed the Presidential Ticket if he was a PDP Member – Bala Mohammed

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says if Bola Tinubu, presidential hopeful of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he would be handed the presidential ticket in 2023.

Mohammed said this on Sunday when he appeared on ThisDay Live, a programme on Arise TV.

Mohammed was one of the invitees that attended the iftar hosted by Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, for presidential hopefuls on Saturday.

Speaking on the programme, Mohammed said he met Tinubu among other eminent Nigerians, adding that the former Lagos governor would be given the presidential ticket because of his contributions if he was in the PDP.

Supporters of Tinubu have been calling on the APC to hand him the presidential ticket because he “worked hard” in getting Buhari into office.

According to the governor, he attended the iftar to prove that he is a product of consensus.

“I knew it was an opportunity to meet other eminent Nigerians who are stepping out to present themselves,” he said.

“And I was lucky I met Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, we discussed, he was calling me consensus and I told him that: ‘if you were in PDP we would have just given you the ticket because we knew that without you Buhari wouldn’t have been a president’ and so in PDP we recognise contributions.

“We have some people in Nigeria that we must recognise and it was definitely a good outing for me yesterday. The First Lady is a unifier. She has shown that she is a mother of the nation and all the presidential aspirants not only in PDP, APC but all the other parties were there. It was an opportunity to show that I’m really a product of consensus or closing rank irrespective of party differences.”

Last Friday, Saraki and Mohammed were announced as “northern consensus candidates” of the PDP following a report released by Ango Abdullahi, elder statesman.

But Tambuwal and other stakeholders rejected the report, saying it was not the agreement reached at a previous meeting of PDP presidential hopefuls.
