  • Zulum Grants N100m to 1,000 Unemployed Youths

    Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has distributed a grant of N100 million as empowerment to 1,000 unemployed youths from different wards in Biu, one of the most populous local government area of the state.

    A statement issued yesterday by the governor’s spokesman, Mallam Isa Gusau, said the grant was meant to be used as start-up capital for micro and small businesses and to stimulate the economy of Biu.

    Gusau, who said his boss made the distribution in a flag-off ceremony at Kadafur Cinema in Biu town last Wednesday, disclosed that Zulum arrived in Biu last Tuesday and was still on the visit to the local government area yesterday.

    He said during the ongoing visit, Zulum inaugurated a mega-size Government Secondary School in Buratai village in Biu for 1,500 students, and also opened a higher Islamic school for 1,200 students and zonal monitoring and evaluation department.

    The N100m grant to 1,000 unemployed youths was the fourth of Zulum’s activities in Biu.

    The governor said the state government must sustain its fight to reduce unemployment and to fight poverty, citing that poverty played a crucial role in the emergence of Boko Haram.

    He noted that his administration was doing everything humanly possible to assist vulnerable citizens across the state.

    The governor urged the 1,000 beneficiaries of the N100million grant to make good use of the money for the betterment of their livelihoods.

    Earlier, the state Commissioner for Youth Empowerment, Sports Development and Poverty Alleviation, Saina Buba, said the 1,000 beneficiaries were selected from wards across Biu LGA.

    The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministries, Enugu, Nigeria, Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka, has urged the Federal Government to provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.

    Mbaka, who stated this during a crossover service early Friday, advised the regime to take swift moves to create jobs to prevent uprising that may consume the government.

    He said “The Holy Spirit of God asked me to warn the government of the day to be very careful; to change policies and take care of the youths without politicising their (youths’) condition.

    “That the government should rise and urgently create jobs and innovate opportunities that would benefit the youths of the nation because they have suffered so much.

    “Don’t politicise the condition of the youths, otherwise, they will arise and end the political system.

    “Should the government fail to do so as soon as possible that time is coming when the youths will rise against the government, and that any attempt to stop them will end the government.”

    He added, “Those who should be serving the country have looted the country dry for their personal aggrandisement such that our children and grandchildren no longer have a future.”

    FG to pay unemployed youth N20k/monthly to clear drainages, sweep markets

    As part of Pres. Buhari’s agenda to reduce unemployment rate in the country, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment,Festus Keyamo (SAN), said that the Federal Government has agreed to pay N20,000 to unemployed youths to maintain public and social infrastructures in the country.

    The youths will be engaged in the clearing of drainages, sweeping markets, road maintenance, traffic control, and cleaning of public infrastructures like health centres and schools.

    Keyamo said the programme is designed to mitigate lack of job opportunities in the rural areas through a short-term engagement of 1,000 unemployed persons per local government area for a period of three months.

    He added that participants will be paid an allowance of N20,000 monthly and are to be recruited largely from the pool of unskilled persons resident in rural areas.
