Abduction of Eight NYSC Members by Gunmen in Zamfara State

    By  Milcah Tanimu

In a distressing incident, gunmen abducted eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as they were traveling along a highway in Zamfara State, located in Nigeria’s North-west region. The unfortunate occurrence took place while the corps members were traveling from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State for their mandatory national service. The vehicle they were traveling in, an AKTC bus, was intercepted by the gunmen along the highway in Zamfara.

According to a source within the transport company, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter, the group of corps members initially numbered 11, but three managed to escape the clutches of the kidnappers. Apart from the eight corps members, the driver of the bus was also abducted. The source revealed that the abducted individuals were taken into the bush by the gunmen, while the police have successfully recovered the bus.

The group had commenced their journey from Uyo on Friday and had spent the night in Abuja. The incident occurred as they were en route to Sokoto. The incident has been reported to both government authorities and security agencies.

Social media posts have identified one of the abducted corps members as Emmanuel Esudue, a graduate of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from Akwa Ibom State University. Additionally, another victim, Betty Udofia, has been named. The kidnappers have reportedly contacted Ms. Udofia’s parents, demanding a ransom of N4 million.

While the police spokesperson in Zamfara, Yazid Abubakar, is yet to confirm the incident, efforts to reach NYSC authorities for their response have been unsuccessful. Eddy Megwa, the NYSC spokesperson, has not responded to calls for comment on the situation.

  • Atiku vows to rescue Nigeria as PDP flags off Presidential Campaign in Uyo

Atiku vows to rescue Nigeria as PDP flags off Presidential Campaign in Uyo

    By Odo Ogenyi

The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has said the party would rescue Nigeria from its myriad of problems and restore unity to the country.

Abubakar who stated this at the flag off of his Presidential campaigns in Uyo on Monday called on Nigerians to vote for him next year as the PDP would rescue Nigeria from hunger, poverty, insecurity, unemployment and disunity.

Dedicating the launch of the campaigns  to the achievements of the Akwa Ibom PDP, the Presidential candidate said the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration brought change as they promised in a negative way.

“Nigeria wants to be like Akwa Ibom. You know why, because since 1999, you have not changed party, but you can see the development that is taking place here in Akwa Ibom. You can see the prosperity that is taking place in Akwa Ibom, you can see the security that is available in Akwa Ibom. So the rest of Nigeria would like to be like Akwa Ibom.

“We want to dedicate the launching of this campaign to the achievements of the Akwa Ibom PDP for good governance.  When PDP came to power in 1999, we met Nigeria in a state of poverty, insecurity, hunger, lack of education.

“We lifted Nigeria from the bottom to the top. We became the biggest economy in Africa, we had peace, we had progress. But when Nigeria said they wanted change, they voted for change in 2015.

“What we have seen is poverty, insecurity,  lack of jobs and disunity. Our children are no longer going to school. Is that what we want to continue in?

“So, today, we have inaugurated the flag off of our campaign to rescue Nigeria. To rescue Nigeria from hunger, to rescue Nigeria from poverty, and also bring back the unity that we require in this country.

“I want to appeal to all Nigerians, I am standing in Akwa Ibom today to ask them to vote for PDP. If you vote for PDP, it would be a return to prosperity, it would be a return to unity, it would be a return to your safety. There would be no more hunger, there would be security.

“I swear, If you vote for PDP, you will not be out of school, you will get jobs, there will be security, there will be unity.” He promised.

Also speaking, the Vice Presidential candidate and Governor of Delta State, Mr Ifeanyi Okowa who said he was impressed at the crowd of supporters, tasked Nigerians to take the ongoing mission by the PDP to rescue the country seriously.

Okowa said the problem of Nigeria has been looking for a rescuer, saying the PDP has offered to rescue the country, saying the party was prepared to make Nigeria a nation where people can trust each other.

“This campaign is a very serious business. There is a great problem in Nigeria and we have been looking for a rescuer. PDP has offered to rescue Nigeria. We believe that PDP is the only party prepared to rescue Nigeria. We want a nation where people can once again trust each other, we are ready to take the bull by the horn,” he said.

While speaking, Chairman of PDP Presidential Campaign Council and  Akwa Ibom Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel said the campaign would restore hope and faith in the common dreams of the people.

Emmanuel who said the APC has destroyed the gains made by the PDP as poverty has reached misery indices, called on Nigerias to checkmate hardship caused by the APC led government.

“The campaigns to restore Nigeria, revitalise the gains and growth of our prosperity, even the parts of our unity that has been fractured, restore hope and faith in our common dreams and aspirations begins today.

“Poverty today has gotten to misery indices. When PDP handed over power, the exchange rate was N186 to a dollar. Today, the exchange rate is almost N800 to a dollar. When PDP handed over power, Nigeria had the largest economy in the entire Africa, today, all those indices have been battered.

“Today, we want to flag off the hope for Nigeria, we want to flag off the rescue mission to Nigeria, we want to flag off the restoration mood to Nigeria. We want to tell Nigerians, the ship is beginning to sail today, we want to tell Nigerians, the train is moving today.

National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu commended the people for the support, saying the crowd showed that the PDP train was more than a party.

“It is important that those who have not joined the PDP train to come on board. We know the problem of Nigerians.  Nigerians are not interested in our individual problems. Nigerians are hungry and suffering from all kinds of illness. Nigerians cannot sleep in peace because of insecurity.

“Let us all join hands together because we have the solutions. We will restore the economy of Nigeria to its glory. You have already witnessed from all our governors. All our PDP governors have done well and we want all these people to join hands with our incoming president to redeem Nigeria.  Nigeria, PDP would not disappoint you,” he stated.

Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wagbara who spoke on behalf of other members said, “Today is a remarkable day. The entire Nigerians are here. Our Presidential candidate and his vice are the persons to beat. PDP is the only party in today’s Nigeria that is ready to take over power.

“We will have success and there is no doubt about it. We used to say there is no vacancy in Aso Villa, today there is vacancy, and the only two persons that would occupy it are our presidential candidate and his vice,” he stated.

On his part, the Director General, PDP Presidential Campaign Management Committee, Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Sokoto  state, Aminu Tambuwal said the duo of Atiku and Okowa would rescue Nigeria from its problems.

“Today is a very historic day in the history of Nigeria and our democracy as we present to Nigeria the most competent of those running for the President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar.

“Our party is presenting hope. These two great Nigerians are moving the party forward. These two Nigerians will move the country forward. We have a balanced ticket that can deliver Nigeria from its current situation. I call on Nigerians to vote this team that would rescue Nigeria,” he stated.

Also speaking, Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba state who spoke on behalf of the Governors of PDP said Atiku and Okowa were two outstanding Nigerians that would reset the country for the good of the youths.

“We assure you that once the team of PDP comes to power, we would change the narratives. You can move freely in Nigeria and there is no more harassment.” Ishiaku said

    Obidients March Grounds Uyo

There was intense gridlock on major roads in Uyo on Saturday as the “Obidient Movement,” supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi embarked on a two million peaceful solidarity rally.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters from over ten different support groups  gathered around the water fountain, along Nwaniba road, the take off point  as early as 8am before moving  to Ibom Plaza ,the centre of Uyo, to Ikot Ekpene road  and other major roads in the city.

The gridlock lasted for over two hours in every location the peaceful  crowd which cut accross all class and age moved to, even though security personnel who displayed professionalism were also on ground to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order.

Speaking with newsmen a stakeholder in the Obedient Movement, Mr Jude Anyanwor said the crowd is not a rented one but people who were tired of the socio economic condition of the country describing the suffering in the country as unprecedented.

Anyanwor urged the people to sustain the move and ensure that Nigeria would regain her lost glory by voting Obi in 2023.

”The time has come when everybody should take his/ her destiny in his hands. We want change in government and it is only Peter Obi that can bring about the positive change.

“The people who came out for the match, came out of their volition because they are tired of what is happening in Nigeria and want ‘change’  and better Nigeria which can only come if Peter Obi wins.

Also, Campaign Director, Peter Obi Integrity Network for Transformation, POINT, Engr Okon Okon expressed confidence that the former Anambra Governor would emerge victorious in the general election because of the massive support across the country.

“Today is the independence day of Nigeria, and I can say that today is the day Nigeria is completely free and independent. As you can see, the revolution is going on and nothing can stop it.

“Look at the type of people that are coming out to express their love and passion for our principal. Everything about today is just dedicated  for Peter Obi.

‘We see a divine hand in it, this movement is not ordinary,  it started like a joke and it’s growing like a wild fire we are talking of 2m man match and you can see the crowd  and these two million people cannot be wrong.” Okon explained.

A physically challenged, Helen Tom,  said she was  motivated to join the rally because of her desire to ensure that change is effected.

‘I am from Ikot Ekpene and what motivated me here is ‘change’. I want a person that knows that people are hungry.  I won’t allow my physical condition to deter me from supporting someone whom I know has the capacity to change Nigeria from this present condition.

“We need a real change not the change that put us in suffering right from 2015.” Tom added.

President of Igbo community and Non Indigenes in Akwa Ibom, Dr Sunday Orie described the crowd as divine urging everyone to show same solidarity at the election day by voting Obi.

“If it is a rented crowd, how much do you think we can spend on one person? I see the hands of God in it. This is not Facebook or  social media as they say. Nigeria will be good again when Peter Obi becomes the President. The thing there is that it is the people out of freewill joined the movement.” Orie said.

  • Residents kick over 40 year old dilapidated road in Uyo

Residents kick over 40 year old dilapidated road in Uyo

Residents of Udo Otung Uboh lane in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital have expressed displeasure over the bad state of the street which has remained unconstructed for over 40 years.

According to residents of the area who described the street as the worst in Uyo, the less than 1km road connecting two prominent streets, Kelvin and Udo Otung Uboh streets has not also witnessed any vehicular traffic for 20 years.

This is because it had been eaten by gully erosion by more than five metres in some places while small trees grow on the middle amidst tall shrubs with nasty smelling stagnant polls of water dotting every inch of the street.

According to Michael Essien, not only has no vehicle driven on the street for over 20 years, dangerous reptiles have taken abode on it making it risky on foot especially during the rainy season.

“This road has been like this even before Akwa Ibom state was created. It is bad to the extent that no government regime has ever come to aid this community in the construction of this road.

“Over 20 years now, no vehicle has entered this road but as a Community through our little collective effort always ensure that the road is walkable. We are appealing to the government and its agencies to come to our aid.

“During this rainy season, the whole area including people’s houses and shops are always flooded with water, thereby leaving some houses and shops unoccupied and useless.

“Therefore,we beg the government to please come and rescue us in this situation so as to bring development to the area. There was a time ministry of Works Came to inspect the road and ever since then we have not heard the outcome of their Inspection.

According to another resident, Udeme Ikpat,” this road has been like this even before Obasanjo’s regime, when we had Obong Victor Attah as the then governor of Akwa Ibom state.

“I met a young man who recounted his encounter with Ephraim Inyang-eyin, who was the Commissioner of works. He said a letter was written to him and then stamped giving them the assurance that the road will be Constructed. But unfortunately for him, when he left the state for a course, another extension of the road was being constrcted instead of the Udotung Uboh lane. So since then, the road has not been constructed.

“Over 40 years now, no government is interested in constructing this road. This road would have been constructed during Nsima Ekere’s tenure as the NDDC boss. He wanted to construct this road but due to some circumstances he could not do it.

“Why I said NDDC would have constructed this road is that Brown street is smaller than Odutung Uboh lane, yet it was constructed. Many landlords and tenants have evacuated this area as a result of flood.

“I am a carpenter but due to the bad condition of this road nobody recognises the existence of a carpenter in this area. My shop is empty and I am always stranded because this is my only source of income. We have lost so many of our properties. Our documents have been damaged because of flood.” Ikpat explained.

Newsmen who visited the area weekend also discovered that due to neglect by successive government, many residents have made illegal encroachment on the road through indiscriminate building of parameter fences, houses and shops making it increasingly vulnerable to flooding and gully erosion.

Observers are of the view that though Akwa Ibom State government has been commended for her effort on road construction despite harsh economic realities, the neglect of such roads within the metropolis would caste a dark cloud and overshadow efforts so far made in this direction.

  • Four die over negligence of traffic signs in Uyo

Four die over negligence of traffic signs in Uyo

Four persons have died in the last two months in Uyo metropolis for an alleged failure to observe road traffic signs and measures while driving across ongoing construction sites of the 3rd Ring Road.

The accidents according to eyewitnesses, occurred on different days along the Oron Road axis of the 3rd Ring Road under construction by Hensek Integrated Services Limited when their vehicles overrun one of the roundabouts under construction.

In all, six vehicles including a truck and five cars were involved with three of the vehicles damaged beyond repairs after hitting the roundabout and somersaulting, killing the occupants on the spot.

In all, the drivers were said to be driving on speed above the required speed limits on the Ring Road which were regulated because of heavy moving equipment and stones barricading some portions of the road.

The most recent occurred on October 31st and involved a commercial driver identified simply as Eric, an indigene of ONNA Local Council of the state but who resided in Uyo.

Eric was said to have rushed to the Uyo-Oron Motor Park around 3am of that day to book his turn to load passengers from Uyo to Oron before the ill-fated accident.

One of his colleagues at the Park, who gave his name as Joseph Okon, told Correspondents that Eric may have been driving on a speed to book his turn as he died on the spot after his salon car somersaulted on the roundabout.

“We heard the sound of crash from the Motor Park which is very close to the roundabout and we rushed to the scene. We were surprised to see the levels of damage on his car with him inside the vehicle because where he lives here in Mbiabong is less than a kilometre to this Park.

“We broke the car, brought him out but he was already dead with blood all over his body inside the badly damaged car.” Okon said.

On whether the deceased was under the influence of alcohol, he added, “I can’t tell because that time was too early for someone to get drunk but I am suspecting that he over-sped and lost control while trying to negotiate the roundabout.”

On whether there are no road signs by the construction firm signaling danger ahead of the roundabout under construction to warn motorists plying the road, another driver at the park said the signs were not visible enough.

“There is but the signs are not easily noticeable at night because there are not reflective enough to vehicles light at night. There should have been the type used by the Federal Road Safety Corps which someone can easily see the reflective warning light at night on the danger ahead.”

However, correspondents who visited the area observed that the warning signs were conspicuous on each side of the road, few metres before the roundabout with Construction Tape on the roundabout and other barricaded areas under construction.

A top official of Hensek Construction who pleaded anonymity reffered newsmen to the Ministry of Works but expressed reservations over the attitude of drivers on roads under construction in different parts of the state.

He maintained that the Ring Road is yet to be handed over to the state government while the company has ensured that adequate signs to alert drivers and commuters on the dangers posed by construction equipment, excavations and right of way were put in place at appropriate locations.

He said that despite enlightenment campaigns by the Federal Road Safety Commission and other bodies, over speeding and carelessness of some drivers especially the commercial drivers have resulted in most of the accidents.

The state commissioner of works Prof. Eno Ibanga could not be reached as he is said to be out of the country.

  • Uyo residents defy govt. vacation order from erosion areas

Uyo residents defy govt. vacation order from erosion areas

Residents of erosion prone areas in Uyo metropolis have defied government directive to vacate even as flood have continued to threaten buildings around those arears.

The areas which include Asutan street, Ikpa and Uyo village roads have been completely cut off with buildings at the verge of collapse .

It was gathered that instead of the residents to adhere to government directive to vacate the area, they sent save our soul message to Governor Udom Emmanuel requesting for alternative accommodation or compensation.

The victims under the body of Asutan Street Ravine Neighbourhood landlord forum pleaded with the governor to either address the issue of ravine encroachment or pay them compensation to enable them relocate to safer environment.

They however expressed fear that as the rains are getting intense, landslide may be triggered saying more buildings risk collapse.

Similarly, residents of Ikpa road and its environs in Uyo have also raised the alarm over the collapsed section of the community road.

It was gathered that the road which leads to the government Science Park and the Uyo City Polytechnic, a private institution in the state, collapsed due to encroachment of a deep gully erosion, thereby rendering the place impassable.

Students of the Polytechnics, motorists and other residents have recounted the challenges and difficulties they face in crossing over the road.

A resident who identified himself as Emmanuel Okon called on the state government to save lives and property by intervening on the road without delay.

“We are calling on the state government to save us from this looming disaster. It needs urgent attention because if it rains two or three times again, the buildings will collapse.” He said.

However , the commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals Mr. Charles Udoh, has in different fora advised the occupants of Asutan streets and other erosion prone areas to vacate to a safer place and save their lives first.

Though no alternative provision was made for their relocation by the State government, the Commissioner has already issued threat notice with the erection of caution barriers around the vicinity.

The statement in parts, “This was to allow for site evaluation survey, development of engineering drawings as well as Bill of Engineering Measurements and Evaluation to guide the restoration works. These processes are currently ongoing.

“In the interim, members of the public are advised to avoid the vicinity, while motorists should use alternative routes.

“Residents, citizens and businesses in the affected neighborhoods are advised to remain vigilant and evacuate the vicinity for now.”

  • Uyo residents, CSOs lampoon PHEDC’s poor services, attitude to customers

Uyo residents, CSOs lampoon PHEDC’s poor services, attitude to customers

Residents and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, have once again voiced their frustration and anger over the continued poor attitude of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHEDC, and their staff on electricity consumers in Akwa Ibom.

They have also warned that the inability of the company to provide prepaid metres to their customers constitute an illegality and a deliberate ploy to exploit residents with outrageous bills.

This is even as power supply in the state has remained epileptic and worsening by the day with many consumers and communities been forced to pay exorbitant bills for nonexistent electricity.

Despite efforts and advocacy by customers and the civil society to ensure sustainable reforms in the power sector and ensure appropriate pricing and billing, the distribution company have continued to display nonchalance over their constitutional responsibilities.

One of the leading groups, the Foundation for Civic Education, Human Rights and Development Advancement ( FoCERaDA)  recently tasked the electricity distribution companies on the need to ensure that all her customers are metred in order to guarantee justice and fairness in the billing and pricing of electricity.

Speaking with newsmen in Uyo, Clifford Thomas, a human rights lawyer and activist and FoCERaDA Executive Director frowned at the continued display of impunity ,arrogance and insensitivity by PHEDC staff and opined that PHED was deliberately refusing to supply metres to customers in order to continue fleecing them through crazy estimated and bulk bills.

The Executive Director maintained that the company was taking undue advantage of the ignorant of the people to force high bills down their throats and blamed helpless members of the public for not wanting to pursue their rights.

“PHED has been stealing from the people, because they know the people don’t know their rights, and very unfortunately the people themselves don’t want to fight for their rights, I don’t  know, either they are docile or they afraid of seeking justice for the unfair treatment they are getting from PHED.

” I can’t also tell if they are enjoying the suffering. How can someone who has been paying a bill of N6,500 before, and suddenly PHED brought a bill of N45,000 and you agree to pay, yet you are complaining, yet, you don’t want to fight against such deliberate act of stealing by PHED in the name of estimated bills.

“We have received several complaints and in the next two weeks, we are going to convene a stakeholders’ forum to address the issues. We are sending letters to the police,, the SSS, and many other groups, and the management of PHED will be invited, the public should come out and air their grievances.

“The company has taken the public for granted for too long. Do you know that if you apply for a metre and you have paid, you are not suppose to pay bills again until the metre is delivered to you, and that when once you complain in writing to PHED about their services, they are not suppose to send you bills until that complaint is resolved, but has that been happening here?” He querried.

Some customers who spoke with newsmen on the state of affairs lamented that the situation is made worse by a new strategy where they accuse customers with PrePaid metres of bridging just to force them to part with huge sums of money as penalty.

A customer who identified herself as Mayen said, “PHED came back to lay claims of bypass after installing a meter in my house. Now they are asking me to pay 300k penalty. Its obvious this is one of their strategies.” She said.

At Asutan Street in Uyo where the Correspondents Chapel of the NUJ is located, their chairman, Mrs Idongesit Ashameri complained that after paying a penalty fee for an alleged bypass, PHEDC sent their officials to correct the error only for them to return some days later to cut the cables supplying electricity to the office on allegations of bypass again.

Even in areas where there is steady power supply customers are  quick to accuse the PHED staff of extortion under the guise of computing their consumption based on  estimated billings.

A resident of Afaha Ube Itam, Uyo, identified  as Mr. Dan Etim said he has the old meter which reads but the PHED staff don’t  read it.

“I learned that in some places they read it. I have a friend off Barracks road who is still making use of the old meter, and they come to read it every month. He told me that he doesn’t have issue with payment of monthly Electricity bill, but here they don’t read my own. We are not billed accurately by PHED.

“Because of small businesses operating here they want to kill us with exorbitant bills. The most annoying thing is that the bills keep increasing on monthly basis. For example if they give you estimated bill of N10,000 this month, next month they will send you N15,000.

” My monthly salary is N36,000 by the time I pay N19,000 or N15,000 electricity bill what will remain for me to feed my family and send my children to School?. For me, it is unfair and sometimes you begin to wonder if Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) increases tariff every month too after it was increased last quarter of 2020 to N62.33 per kilowatt unit of energy.” Etim lamented

Corroborating, a resident of Okedo estate who simply identified himself as Akpan said, “my meter reads but they don’t read the analogue meter because the one in my house and other houses in the estate are functioning. And when you ask the PHED workers why they don’t read they will not give you any answer.

” It is sad. And when you complain about the outrageous bills the marketers will boldly tell you that they have target to meet. So if your area is enjoying steady power supply so they will now be using inaccurate reading to meet their target.

“What do I have in my house that they will send me N20,000 or sometimes N18,000 bill for a month? If not for the high cost of purchasing the digital meter I would have procured mine since they are not reading the analogue meter which is still working.”

Another resident of Idoro Road Mr. Chris Nse opined that the PHED company continue to tell the governor that electricity consumers in the state dodge paying for energy they consume, but they fail to also tell the governor that they don’t supply most areas with power.

“There are so many areas that don’t see light for weeks, sometimes months, but they still send bills to such places. But I think people are becoming wise to challenge or even attack them out of anger, it is wickedness. And that is why the issue appear to have reduced. So  what they now do is to give outrageous bills to few areas that have steady light.

” I am appealing to our governor to intervene in the cost of the pre-paid meters so that poor people can also afford it and install. The PHED staff are taking advantage of the fact that many people cannot afford the prepaid to continue to shortchange them.

Meanwhile a Civil Society  Organization COMPPART Foundation for Justice and Peace Building has decided to wade into the issue following series of unending complaints from the residents .

The state executive director and human rights activist, Mr. Saviour Akpan disclosed that the Organisation is launching a campaign against the anomaly in the system.

“We are collecting signatures from the citizens, People from all parts of Akwa Ibom have been coming to my office and so far we have collected more than 500 signatures from across the state

“I have been announcing it on air. By the end of this June we will attach the signature to what we have written, send it to state government and then we will now run the campaign that nobody should pay Electricity Bill for 3 months unless they give you prepaid meter.” Akpan said.

But the PHEDC in an email message to our correspondent said that it has increased efforts to address many of the challenges faced by its customers regarding unavailability of prepaid metres, epileptic power and overbilling while describing the allegations of delibrate meter bypass by its staff to exploit customers as unfounded.

The message endorsed by its acting Manager, Corporate Communications, Chioma Aninwe said that in addition to the Asset Provider Scheme,  MAP, the company has also taking part in the National Mass Metering Program,NMMP, to make prepaid metres available to customers.

On epileptic power, Aninwe said that, “in our usual style of keeping customers informed ,we have communicated to customers via our various channels ( electronic ,print & social media to inform them of the current challenges being experienced but in electronic language  ( PHED has been placed on system loading).

“Our Systems Operation Unit is thereby constrained to proactively manage the available load to create a balance in the interim.

“Furthermore Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry is a full value chain emanating from generation to distribution. Some of the challenges being faced are constraints from the transmission end which are not limited to infrastructural issues. Power supply will improve and stabilize as soon as these challenges are rectified.” She said.

On complaints of overbilling she explained that bills are generated based on NERC approved tariff, availability of power supply as well as load assessment adding that many customers who are ignorant of the categorization of billing and the attendant tariff would assume that they are being overbilled.

Aninwe added that contrary to popular opinions, the PHEDC has continued to invest in power infrastructure in Akwa Ibom and is currently undertaking the connection of Ibom Airport to PHED network, rehabilitation of Uyo network, installation of Transformers while it recently acquired operational assets to aid their operations in the state.

“As regards the purported meter bridge to impose unnecessary bypass offence on customers, this is completely unfounded.

The current management under the leadership of Dr. Henry Ajagbawa has zero tolerance of any form of corruption.” Aninwe concluded.

In the meantime, the state government in 2019 and in trying to bridge the power gap came up with the “power for all initiative 2021″, meant to ensure that 200 unconnected villages are connected to the national grid and ensure that the entire state enjoy 24 hour power supply by providing the necessary infrastructure.

Engr. Meyen Etukdoh, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on power and Managing Director of Ibom Power Company said the initiative is being executed in phases.

“It is not the place of government to supply transformers, that’s the job of PHED, but, the governor had to intervene for the sake of the masses, so that the people of Akwa Ibom can have light.” Etukdoh said in a recent media on one of the Radio stations in the state.

The Methodist Church of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to rejig it’s security machinery to check terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria.

This was contained in a nine point communique issued and endorsed by its Archbishop, Most Rev Chimezue Nwamkpa and Lay President Arch Sunday Bassey at the end of the 26th Annual Synod of Uyo Diocese and made available to newsmen in Uyo yesterday.

With the theme, ” Watch and Pray” the communique observed that challenges facing the nation had impacted negatively on states and churches in particular and appealed to federal government to tackle them holistically.

He listed issues affecting the nation as terrorism, insurgency occasioned by banditry and encouraged Nigerians to be morally upright, sensitive and vigilant so that they would not be wiped out by those calamities.

“Synod appreciates the Prelate, His Eminence, Dr Samuel ‘Emeka Kanu Uche, JP, for the insightful theme, “Watch and Pray”, which is very apt and timely at a time when the world is grappling with insecurity and terrorism.

“Synod calls on government at all levels to reappraise their anti-terrorism strategy, while also encouraging Nigerians to be morally upright, spiritually sensitive and increasingly vigilant.” It said.

It also commended the FG for effective handling of covid19 pandemic but regretted that ongoing social investment programmes did not get to most vulnerable persons in the society .

“Synod commends the Federal Government of Nigeria on the handling of the Covid 19 pandemic, but expresses concern that the numerous ongoing social investment programmes, such as the conditional cash transfer, Covid 19 National Survival Fund, Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme (P-YES), Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme (AADS), N-power, Target Credit Facility, Financial Moratoriums and other relief handouts did not get to most of the vulnerable, for whom they were meant.” It said.

The communique commended the leadership of the church for successful skill acquisition and enterprenuership in the state adding that such gesture would reduce unemployment problems in the state and lauded achievements of Governor Udom Emmanuel in providing skill acquisition training for 3000 youths.

It however condemned violent killings in Essien Udim , OrukAnam , Mbo , Okobo , Ini and other parts of the state including unwarranted attacks on security agencies within and outside Akwa Ibom State.

“Synod condemns the unabated pockets of violence and bloodletting in Essien Udim, Mbo, Oruk Anam, Okobo and Ini local government areas of Akwa Ibom state; Nsukka, Enugu state, Owerri, Imo State and other parts of the country.

“Synod reasoned that much appears left to be desired on the part of government in checking and bringing to book the activities of persons identified as bandits, killer herdsmen, kidnappers and terrorists who look determined to make the country unsafe for peaceful coexistence of Nigerians.” It concluded.
