Jude Bellingham explains the reason behind his decision to wear Zidane’s No. 5 shirt

During his official presentation in the Spanish capital on Thursday, Jude Bellingham, the newly signed player for Real Madrid, expressed his desire to honor the legendary Zinedine Zidane by donning the number five shirt.

The 19-year-old England international completed his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Madrid on Wednesday, securing a six-year contract for a fee of 103 million euros ($112 million), with the potential for an additional 30 percent in bonuses.During the press conference, Jude Bellingham, joined by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, shed light on his decision to choose the number five shirt.

Bellingham, who has predominantly worn the number 22 throughout his career, explained that the number is significant to him as it represents the sum of shirt numbers 10, 8, and 4. This combination symbolizes his versatility in midfield and wide-ranging skill set.

It is worth noting that the number 22 is currently worn by defender Antonio Rudiger, hence Bellingham’s decision to opt for a different number at Real Madrid.Jude Bellingham, speaking at a news conference, reiterated his admiration for Zinedine Zidane and the impact he had at Real Madrid. He expressed his intention to pay homage to the legendary player by wearing the number five shirt.

“I’ve mentioned in several interviews how much I admire Zinedine Zidane and the legacy he has at this club with this number. I’m just being myself, Jude, but it’s certainly a way of honoring his greatness,” Bellingham stated.“The number 22 has a big meaning for me, and in my heart I’m still number 22, just with the number 5 on my back.”

Bellingham said wearing Zidane’s previous shirt did not mean he was trying to emulate the French midfield maestro, who went on to win three Champions Leagues as Real Madrid’s manager.

“The (Madrid) shirt itself is enough pressure … for me it’s a bit of homage to a great player,” said Bellingham.

“Maybe I can extend the legacy of the number, instead of trying to reach his.”

Bellingham has plenty of other reference points still at the club to learn from, including veteran midfielders Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
“The things I’ll gain especially from the two older lads, Modric and Kroos, will be unbelievable, with their knowledge of the game,” said Bellingham.

“I’ll be like a sponge around them, trying to steal anything they’ve got. They’ll probably get annoyed with me.”

    – ‘Goosebumps’ –
The England international, who shone at the Qatar World Cup last winter, broke through as a 16-year-old at Birmingham City, who retired his shirt number after he moved to Dortmund in 2020 for 25 million euros.

Bellingham said he had other options on the table but quickly decided Real Madrid was his best option.

He said he wanted to stay out of his comfort zone, even though a return to England would have been an easy choice to make.“I’d always been aware of the interest from England, that’s pretty normal, but it was a bit of a surprise when my dad sat me down and told me, 12 to 15 months ago that you’ve had a bit of interest from Real Madrid,” said the midfielder.

“I had goosebumps, my heart was close to stopping. When that manifests itself it’s such an amazing feeling.”

Bellingham, who turns 20 in June, was named the player of the season in the Bundesliga as he led Dortmund to the verge of the title, although they were pipped by giants Bayern Munich on the final day of the season.

The player said both learning and winning trophies was his aim at Real Madrid, and brushed off questions about his large transfer fee.

“It doesn’t matter how much you come here for, the objective is the same, to help Real Madrid win trophies and keep being the biggest club in the world,” said Bellingham.“I’m a footballer, not a lawyer or an accountant, my job is to play on the pitch.”

  • Benzema spares Zidane Europa League humiliation

Benzema spares Zidane Europa League humiliation

It was a chilly night in the Spanish capital, but Real Madrid did not freeze. On the contrary, everything clicked into place for Zinedine Zidane – and not a moment too soon.

Karim Benzema was at his lethal best, Sergio Ramos returned to galvanise the defence and the record 13-time European champions flexed their muscles to blow away Borussia Monchengladbach and quieten the Europa League jibes being thrown their way.

Real Madrid have never failed to make it out of their Champions League group and despite fears among their fans and media in the Spanish capital, that proud record never looked in doubt at the Alfredo di Stefano on Wednesday.

Zidane’s side won 2-0 thanks to Benzema’s headed brace, but it might have been five, six or seven, such was their dominance.

It had been a dismal group phase for Madrid until this point, with six of their seven points coming against a weak Inter, and the other in a snatched 2-2 draw at Gladbach.

The good news was their captain’s return from injury, with Madrid suffering eight defeats in their last 10 Champions League games without Ramos. Among the worst of those were the two recent early exits against Man City and Ajax, both in the last 16.

The 35-year-old’s leadership was keenly felt, and heard, as he marshalled and instructed the defence throughout, as Madrid kept only their second clean sheet of the group phase.

Benzema took care of things at the other end of the field. The Frenchman celebrated equalling Roberto Carlos’ record of 527 games for a non-Spanish player at Madrid by sending his side ahead with a brilliant header from Lucas Vazquez’s cross in the ninth minute.

Alassane Plea might have equalised for Gladbach when he ran through on goal moments later but clipped his effort over Courtois and wide of the post, in the Germans’ only promising moment in the first half.

The rest was one-way traffic, with Luka Modric hitting the post and having a goal disallowed for offside, while Benzema headed in his second goal in much the same way he managed his first, this time connecting with a ball that Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes had served up on a silver platter.

In Madrid’s 1-0 win over Sevilla last weekend, we saw signs of them getting back on the right path after a shaky start to the season, showing the kind of discipline and desire that propelled them to the Liga title last season.

This performance raised the bar further, with Zidane’s resurgent side not just defending well but looking confident and sure of themselves, trusting in one another, their prestige and their undoubted individual quality.

Most importantly, they worked hard, which wasn’t the case in recent defeats by Valencia and Alaves.

This was the perfect warm-up, then, for Saturday’s Madrid derby clash with rivals Atletico, and the ideal way to lighten the load on Zidane. It’s unlikely he’ll face any more direct questions about his future, at least until the Champions League resumes in 2021.

Madrid were helped by Gladbach’s dismal display, with the visitors looking every bit the team that collapsed in the final three minutes of the pair’s 2-2 draw at Borussia-Park in October, rather than the exciting side that steamrollered los Blancos for the first 87 minutes of that game.

Benzema came within inches of a hat-trick with an effort that smashed against the crossbar, Sommer produced a spectacular save to deny Ramos, while Vazquez hit the near post too as Real ran riot.

Benzema had another chance at the death but this time he was unable to nod the ball home. Third time unlucky, but no unlucky third place for Madrid.

Despite all the mounting doubts and criticism, Zidane led his side to top spot in Group B. Mission accomplished, order restored.

  • ‘Sacking Zidane would be very hasty by Real Madrid’ – Sanchez

‘Sacking Zidane would be very hasty by Real Madrid’ – Sanchez

Sacking Zinedine Zidane would be a “very hasty” decision by Real Madrid, says Hugo Sanchez, with the Blancos urged to stick with their current coach despite recent struggles for form.

The reigning La Liga champions have found the going tough in 2020-21 at home and abroad.

Inconsistency proved to be an issue at times last season, only for a remarkable post-lockdown run to deliver another domestic crown.

Defending that prize is not going to be easy, with Zidane’s side dropping 13 points through 10 games.

Struggles are also being endured on a European stage, with Madrid in danger of missing out on a place in the last-16 of the Champions League.

A 2-0 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk last time out has the Blancos sat third in Group B with one game left to take in – against table-topping Borussia Monchengladbach.

Real’s fate remains in their own hands there, while time is on their side in La Liga, but questions are being asked of Zidane’s ongoing presence and his ability to build on successes of the recent past.

He has vowed not to walk away from Santiago Bernabeu, with there a desire on his part to put things right, and Sanchez believes faith should be shown in an iconic Frenchman.

The legendary former Blancos striker told ESPN when quizzed on whether Zidane should be sacked: “No, I don’t think so yet; it would be very hasty right now.

“You have to wait until after the remaining [Champions League group] game, which is complicated by being dependent on others.

“There will be a certain pressure, nervousness and obviously waiting for the result against Borussia Monchengladbach, too.”

While calling for patience from Real, Mexican legend Sanchez – who hit 208 goals in 283 appearances for the Blancos in his playing days – concedes that standards are slipping in the Spanish capital.

He added: “There have been serious criticisms of Zidane.

“He is bearing it stoically, but I note his nervousness because his players aren’t rising to the expectations placed upon Real Madrid players.”

Real will be back in domestic action against Sevilla on Saturday, before then taking in a crucial home date with Monchengladbach on December 9 which will determine their continental fate.

Zidane backs Lucas Vazquez for new Real Madrid contract

Zinedine Zidane says Lucas Vazquez “has Real Madrid in his heart” and deserves to be offered a new contract by the club.

The Spain international has started seven games for Madrid this season but is due to be out of contract at the end of the campaign.

He played the full 90 minutes of Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Inter in the Champions League and impressed with his direct attacking display.

As well as setting up substitute Rodrygo for his side’s second goal, which deflected off Achraf Hakimi, adding to Eden Hazard’s early penalty, Vazquez also had more shots (four) than any player on the field.

Vazquez has showed his versatility by also featuring at right-back at times and Zidane wants the 29-year-old academy product to be rewarded with fresh terms.

“He always gives everything for us. I have always valued him and what he gives to us on the pitch,” Zidane told Movistar+.

“Now he is having the opportunity to show us what he is all about. He was a youth player for us and has Madrid in his heart. I’m happy for him and the team.

“He is an important player and the club knows it. I think it will happen that he will renew.”

Hazard’s seventh-minute penalty was his first Champions League goal since November 2017 on his fourth start of another disrupted campaign.

He got 78 minutes under his belt, having also started the 1-1 draw with Villarreal last weekend, and Zidane hopes the Belgium forward can soon find his rhythm.

“I’m happy because he’s playing. He needs to play and get his football back,” Zidane said. “For the good of the team, let him keep growing, because we need him.”

Madrid’s two goals came either side of Arturo Vidal being issued quick-fire yellow cards for dissent 33 minutes into the game after being denied a penalty.

The victory for Zidane’s men was their first ever away at Inter in European competition and put them a point behind Group B leaders Borussia Monchengladbach, with Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter three and five points worse off than Madrid respectively.

“We played a great game from the beginning to the end,” Zidane said. “We played serious and with character. They were three very important points and we got the best of us.

“I’m happy with the players. When they have to turn it on, they turn it on.”
