By Aga Samuel Imoter, Jalingo

The Taraba State Government has unveiled its Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, with Governor Agbu Kefas directing the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to develop a comprehensive implementation framework and position the state to benefit from the emerging carbon market.

The policy, launched on Friday at the CTC Hall, Jalingo, is expected to provide a coordinated framework for mainstreaming climate considerations into government policies, programmes and development planning across the state.

The event attracted senior government officials, academics, environmental specialists, development practitioners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Governor calls for action

Speaking at the launch, Kefas said climate change could no longer be treated as an isolated environmental concern, insisting that environmental considerations must be integrated into government planning and decision-making.

The governor said the policy offered opportunities to strengthen interventions in agriculture, environmental protection and infrastructure, while improving the state’s capacity to respond to the growing effects of climate change.

He directed the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to produce a clear implementation framework, backed by a definite timeline, to ensure that the policy does not remain a document but translates into practical interventions across the state.

Kefas also charged the ministry to explore opportunities in the carbon market, urging it to work with relevant institutions and development partners to attract funding, investment and technical support for climate-related initiatives.

He directed that the 16 local government areas be incorporated into the implementation strategy, stressing the importance of taking climate interventions to communities and ensuring broad-based participation.

The governor also appealed to residents to embrace environmentally responsible practices and support government measures aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change.

Commissioner describes policy as roadmap

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Aishat A. Barde, described the policy as a roadmap for strengthening climate governance, protecting ecosystems and building resilience across the state.

Barde said the document was developed following extensive consultations, technical assessments and collaboration among ministries, experts, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

She said the policy would provide a more coordinated approach to addressing climate-related challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable economic development.

Stakeholders commend initiative

Also speaking, Dr Eugene Ituwa, who delivered a presentation on climate change, said the policy demonstrated Taraba’s commitment to moving from climate awareness to practical action.

He stressed the need for sustained implementation, effective coordination and monitoring to ensure that the objectives of the policy produce measurable environmental and socio-economic outcomes.

Goodwill messages were delivered by Dr Tafarki Agbadu Eneme, member representing Kurmi Constituency in the Taraba State House of Assembly and Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Climate Change; Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University, Professor Oladipo Emmanuel; and Dr Vincent Ndukka Ojeh of Taraba State University.

The stakeholders commended the state government for developing the policy and urged the relevant authorities to prioritise implementation, financing, accountability and community participation.

They noted that effective implementation could strengthen climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem conservation, sustainable infrastructure and access to emerging climate-finance opportunities.

The launch comes as Taraba seeks to integrate environmental sustainability into its broader development agenda, with the effectiveness of the new policy expected to depend largely on implementation, institutional coordination, access to climate finance and sustained participation by communities and development partners.

From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Kogi State Police Command has intensified joint bush clearance operations in identified forest areas to deny criminal elements access to suspected hideouts and forest corridors across the state. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, said the operations were part of efforts to maintain pressure on suspected criminal elements operating in remote areas and improve security for residents and farmers.

According to a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, a joint operation was conducted on Thursday, August 20, across forest locations linking Kabba/Bunu, Obajana and Lokoja. The operation involved personnel from the police, military, local vigilante groups and other security auxiliaries.

The team searched the Daji 2 Forest Zone and cleared an abandoned settlement reportedly suspected of having been used as a hideout or staging point for criminal activities. The security personnel also conducted a clearance operation at Amos Camp, another abandoned location in difficult terrain involving creeks and mountainous areas.

The command said signs of recent movement were observed along routes leading towards the Oyo Forest axis of Obajana, suggesting that occupants had left the area before the security team arrived. The police said the operations had boosted confidence among residents and farmers, with some returning to their farmlands and daily activities.

Kankarofi commended participating personnel and collaborating security and community groups for their resilience and teamwork. He assured residents that patrols, intelligence gathering and bush clearance operations would continue across identified areas to improve security and protect legitimate economic activities.
