The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has challenged capacity figures shared by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC), stating that the data does not reflect current realities of Nigeria’s power grid.In a statement issued by TCN, the company responded to a PHEDC social media post that put its transmission wheeling capacity at 7,300MW, with operational output between 4,000MW and 5,000MW.
TCN said its verified transmission capacity stands at 8,700MW, based on system simulations conducted by the Nigerian Independent System Operator. It added that ongoing investments in infrastructure, including substations, transformers, and transmission lines, have strengthened grid capacity. The company explained that daily electricity output depends on coordination among generation companies, transmission, and distribution companies, with system balancing handled by the independent operator.
To support its position, TCN cited recent sector records showing higher transmission levels. It noted that peak generation above 5,500MW was successfully transmitted on multiple occasions in early 2025, including a record 5,801.84MW.TCN urged stakeholders to verify information before publication, noting that inaccurate data could misrepresent sector progress and affect public confidence. The company reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and continued development of Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.
