TCN End-of-Year Message Highlights Landmark Power Sector Reforms, Infrastructure Growth

By Jabiru Hassan

The TCN end-of-year message delivered by the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engineer (Dr) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, has highlighted 2025 as a landmark year marked by major reforms, infrastructure expansion, and record-breaking milestones in Nigeria’s power transmission sector. In the goodwill message, themed “Reflecting on a Year of Progress and Powering Our Future Together,” Abdulaziz outlined key achievements that he said have repositioned TCN as a critical driver of national economic growth through improved electricity transmission and institutional reforms.

According to the managing director, 2025 will be remembered as a historic year following the successful unbundling of TCN and the operational take-off of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). He said the reform has clarified roles within the sector and strengthened efficiency in system and market operations.“ With pride and gratitude, I reflect on 2025 as a year that reshaped the identity of TCN. The unbundling of the company and the successful take-off of NISO stand out as defining achievements,” Abdulaziz said. He explained that with the reform completed, TCN is now fully focused on infrastructure development, asset maintenance, and the expansion and strengthening of the national transmission network. The company also retains responsibility for general administration, compliance audits, and market enforcement. Abdulaziz disclosed that TCN made deliberate efforts to rehabilitate ageing assets and expand transformer capacity nationwide. As a result, the country’s electricity wheeling capacity increased to 8,700 megawatts, enhancing TCN’s ability to support rising energy demand.

Highlighting operational milestones, he noted that in March 2025, TCN transmitted an all-time peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts, with a maximum daily energy delivery of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours. He described the achievement as the highest ever recorded in Nigeria’s electricity history. Between January 2024 and November 2025, the managing director said TCN commissioned 82 new power transformers, adding over 8,500 megawatts to the national grid. He said the development underscored the company’s commitment to improving grid stability and ensuring optimal electricity supply. The TCN end-of-year message also highlighted progress on donor-funded projects valued at $1.16 billion. Abdulaziz said the partnerships supported critical initiatives, including the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which involves the construction of five new substations and a new 330kV transmission line.

On security challenges, he acknowledged vandalism as a major concern, revealing that TCN recorded 131 vandalism incidents between January and November 2025. He said the company is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser, security agencies, and community vigilante groups to curb the menace. Within the organisation, Abdulaziz said management maintained strong collaboration with labour unions to ensure industrial harmony. He commended the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) for sustaining industrial peace throughout the year.

In his closing remarks, the TCN boss expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, development partners, security agencies, the media, and stakeholders across the power sector. He expressed optimism that 2026 would bring further progress as TCN continues efforts to improve power supply nationwide.
