The Health Benefits and Risks of Eating Ponmo

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Ponmo, a popular beef skin dish known as “Kanda” in Hausa and “Welle” in Ghana, is a favorite in West Africa and among African communities worldwide. People often enjoy ponmo in soups, stews, or as a snack with beverages like beer. Despite its popularity, ponmo presents both health benefits and risks.

Ponmo offers significant health benefits due to its rich collagen content, which supports skin firmness and youthfulness. Collagen helps maintain a smooth and resilient complexion. Additionally, ponmo contributes to stronger bones. The collagen, along with essential minerals like phosphorus and calcium, strengthens bones and helps prevent conditions like osteoporosis.

Ponmo also aids digestion with its high fiber content. Fiber promotes regular bowel movements and supports overall gut health by ensuring food moves efficiently through the digestive tract, reducing the risk of constipation.

Moreover, ponmo provides a good energy source. Its nutritional profile includes essential minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, and potassium, which enhance overall vitality and well-being.

However, ponmo comes with risks. A 2024 study found that ponmo and its soaking water often have high bacterial counts, including E. coli. This contamination can lead to food poisoning and other health issues, making proper sanitation and handling crucial.

Additionally, ponmo may contain harmful substances due to poor animal hygiene and antibiotic use in livestock. Thorough cooking and cleaning might not eliminate all health risks associated with these contaminants.

The processing of ponmo can also introduce harmful chemicals. Vendors sometimes use burning or chemical soaking methods, which can expose ponmo to contaminants like metals and engine oil. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned about these potential contaminants.

To enjoy ponmo safely, ensure it is properly cleaned and cooked. Buy from reputable vendors with good hygiene practices and check for contamination signs. While ponmo offers nutritional benefits, careful preparation is essential to avoid health risks.
