A tragic incident unfolded in Yar’Gwanda village, Tsanyawa local Government area of Kano State on Sunday, claiming the lives of three individuals: 60-year-old Malam Danjuma, his son Ibrahim, 35, and Aminu Gaye, also 35, who died in a pit latrine while attempting to retrieve a cell phone.
Abba Alasan, 28, one of the rescuers, was fortunate to be pulled out alive from the latrine.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident during a statement to newsmen on Monday.
Abdullahi narrated, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda, that four men had been trapped inside a pit latrine.”
He continued, “Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the pit latrine when he got trapped. Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped. Gaye and Alasan also entered to rescue both men and got trapped.”
Abdullahi explained that while the first three victims were rescued unconscious, the fourth victim, Alasan, was brought out alive. The victims were handed over to a Superintendent of Police at the Tsanyawa Police Division, Mr. Iro Lado, and subsequently conveyed to Bichi Special Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, doctors at the hospital confirmed the deaths of Danjuma, Ibrahim, and Gaye, while Alasan remained alive.
