Tinubu Orders Political Appointees Seeking Office to Resign by March 31

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026. The directive was communicated in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services, **Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

According to the circular, the decision is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

The resignation requirement applies to a wide range of presidential appointees, including ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, and commissions. Affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation before the stated deadline.

The presidency said the directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and creating a level playing field for all aspirants. President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and supporting credible electoral processes.
