Top 5 Home Exercises to Alleviate Leg Swelling

By   Milcah  Tanimu

Leg swelling, or peripheral edema, occurs when excess fluid accumulates in the legs, feet, and ankles, often due to inactivity or poor circulation. Engaging in regular exercise can help alleviate this condition by promoting fluid movement back toward the center of the body. Here are five simple exercises you can do at home to reduce leg swelling.

1. Walking
Walking is a straightforward and effective way to enhance circulation and reduce swelling. A brisk 10 to 15-minute walk can significantly diminish fluid retention and inflammation in your legs.

2. Knee Extension Kicks
For this exercise, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet elevated. Straighten one leg and kick it upward, then switch to the other leg. Perform this exercise for about five minutes. It helps strengthen leg muscles and improve lymphatic drainage, aiding in the removal of excess fluid.

3. Laying Down Trunk Rotation
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. With your arms at your sides, slowly rotate your upper body to one side while keeping your shoulders pressed down. Hold the position for a few seconds, then return to the center and repeat on the opposite side. This exercise reduces resistance in your leg’s blood vessels and strengthens your core.

4. Squats
Squats are excellent for strengthening calf muscles and minimizing fluid buildup. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees as if you’re sitting back, and keep your back straight. Rise back up through your heels and repeat about ten times.

5. Seated Calf Raises
This exercise helps pump blood back to your heart, reducing swelling in your feet. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slowly lift your heels off the ground for a few seconds, then lower them. Repeat this ten times.

Incorporating these exercises into your daily routine can effectively relieve discomfort associated with leg swelling. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional for further guidance.
