In recent years, marathon races have gained significant traction across Nigeria, drawing both local and international attention. From the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon to the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race in Edo State, these events have proven to be more than just athletic competitions; they serve as revenue-generating ventures, tourism boosters, and platforms for local athletes to showcase their talents.
It is in this light that stakeholders in Nasarawa State are calling on the government to take over Eggon Hill and transform it into a premier marathon route.
Eggon Hill, known for its rugged terrain and scenic landscapes, presents a perfect opportunity for endurance sports, particularly long-distance races. However, beyond its potential as a sporting haven, the hill has unfortunately become a hideout for kidnappers and armed robbers, posing a security threat to residents and travelers. This growing concern has led to calls for the state government to reclaim and develop the area for positive use.
During a recent visit of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nasarawa State chapter, to the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Labaran Magaji, the SWAN chairman, Comrade Smah George, underscored the importance of converting the hill into a marathon race track. He emphasized that such a move would not only boost sports development but also tackle the rising insecurity in the region.
“The Eggon Hill has the potential to become one of the most exciting marathon routes in Nigeria,” George stated. “Imagine a Nasarawa Marathon that attracts runners from across Africa and beyond. This will not only improve the state’s sports profile but also create employment and enhance security in the area.”
Hon. Magaji, in response, commended the idea, describing it as “one of the best suggestions” he had heard that day. He encouraged SWAN to push the initiative further, assuring them of the government’s readiness to consider viable projects that would uplift the state. “This is the kind of forward-thinking initiative we need. Sports and tourism go hand in hand, and if properly implemented, this could become a landmark event for Nasarawa,” Magaji noted.
Marathons in Nigeria have demonstrated remarkable economic and social impact. The Lagos City Marathon, for instance, has attracted elite athletes from across the world, injecting millions of naira into the state’s economy. Similarly, the Okpekpe Road Race has put Edo State on the global athletics map, drawing sponsorship deals and boosting local businesses.
A well-organized Eggon Hill Marathon could follow this trend, with benefits extending beyond the sports sector. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and local artisans stand to gain from the influx of visitors. The race could also serve as a platform for cultural promotion, showcasing the rich heritage of the Eggon people and other ethnic groups in Nasarawa State.
Security experts believe that reclaiming the hill for public events will significantly curb criminal activities in the area. According to community leader, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, “The presence of security operatives and regular human activities in and around the hill will make it difficult for criminals to use it as a hideout. A marathon will bring life to the area.”
Local athletes also see this as an opportunity to develop their careers. Abdullahi Hassan, a long-distance runner from Nasarawa, expressed his excitement over the idea. “We have great athletes here who lack exposure. A marathon event in Nasarawa would give us a chance to compete with the best and possibly qualify for international championships,” he said.
The Nasarawa State government has in recent years shown commitment to sports development, as seen in its support for Nasarawa United Football Club and other sporting activities. However, there is a need for diversification into other sports, particularly athletics, which has produced some of Nigeria’s biggest sporting icons.
Moreover, leveraging on Eggon Hill’s natural landscape will align with global trends in eco-friendly sports tourism. Many countries have transformed natural landmarks into sporting destinations, creating revenue streams from entry fees, sponsorships, and merchandising. The same model can be replicated in Nasarawa State.
Former athlete and coach, Christopher Madaki, noted that marathons are not just about running; they symbolize endurance, perseverance, and unity. “A Nasarawa Marathon would bring people together from different backgrounds, fostering unity and peace. It would also serve as an inspiration to young athletes,” he said.
As discussions around this initiative continue, it is essential for the government to take practical steps towards its realization. This includes commissioning a feasibility study, engaging stakeholders, and partnering with private sector investors who may be willing to sponsor the event.
Another key consideration is infrastructure. For a successful marathon, roads leading to the hill must be rehabilitated at all times, security must be reinforced, and necessary logistics must be put in place. The government can collaborate with the Sports Writers Association Nigeria, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and other relevant bodies to ensure the race meets international standards.
With the growing global interest in marathon races, establishing a Nasarawa Marathon could place the state on the world map, attracting elite runners, tourists, and investors. It is an opportunity that should not be overlooked.
In conclusion, the Nasarawa government must seize this moment to turn Eggon Hill from a security liability into an economic and sporting asset. As Hon. Magaji rightly pointed out, this is an idea worth pursuing. “We must harness our natural resources for growth. This marathon will not only boost sports but also reposition Nasarawa as a major destination for athletics and tourism in Nigeria,” he affirmed.
The ball is now in the court of the state government, sports stakeholders, and private investors to take decisive action. With commitment and proper planning, the Eggon Hill Marathon could become one of Nigeria’s most anticipated annual sporting events, changing the narrative of the region and bringing immense benefits to all
