Manchester United have officially parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to the Portuguese manager’s 14-month spell at Old Trafford.
The development was first reported on Monday morning by respected transfer insiders David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano. Amorim was informed of the decision by club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, with the dismissal taking immediate effect.
Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed to take charge of the team on an interim basis.
Confirming the news on X, Ornstein wrote:
“EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim as head coach. The 40-year-old Portuguese has been informed of the decision and leaves with immediate effect after 14 months, following a breakdown in relations. Darren Fletcher expected to take over on an interim basis.”
Romano also announced:
“BREAKING: Rúben Amorim has just been sacked by Manchester United. Decision made this morning.”
Reports indicate that Amorim’s exit followed mounting tensions within the club, which intensified after his public outburst following United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United. Disagreements over transfer strategy and a breakdown in communication between Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox are believed to have played a significant role in the decision.
In a statement confirming the dismissal, Manchester United said:
“With the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the leadership has reluctantly concluded that this is the right moment to make a change. The decision is aimed at giving the team the best possible chance of achieving the highest attainable finish this season.
“The club thanks Ruben Amorim for his contribution and wishes him every success in the future.”
United are expected to begin the search for a permanent replacement in the coming days.
