Veteran Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha Dies at 95

Renowned highlife musician and folklorist Mike Ejeagha, famed for blending Igbo folklore and proverbs into rich musical narratives, has passed away at the age of 95.

The legendary artist reportedly died on Friday night around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha.

Ejeagha was celebrated for his unique storytelling style that captivated audiences across generations. Through his music, he preserved and popularised Igbo culture, using parables and traditional wisdom to craft songs that were both entertaining and deeply instructive.

He gained prominence in the 1980s through radio, where his distinct voice and lyrical storytelling earned him a revered place in Nigeria’s cultural and musical history.

In 2024, Ejeagha’s music found renewed popularity when one of his classic songs sparked the viral “Gwo Gwo Gwo” dance challenge, popularised by skit maker Brain Jotter, introducing his timeless artistry to a new generation.

Mike Ejeagha leaves behind an enduring legacy as a cultural icon whose music transcended time and tradition.
