Wike orders government hospitals to give free treatment to victims of food stampede

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Barr, Nyesom Wike, has directed free treatment for victims of the stampede which occurred during a food distribution at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Maitama in Abuja on Saturday as he sympathized with them.

In a statement issued on Saturday, by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, government hospitals have been directed to treat those that were injured in the stampede free of charge.

The Minister also ordered that henceforth individuals or organizations planning distribution of palliatives such as food items or cash should obtain police permission before doing so.

Wike lamented the painful death of 10 persons in the stampede prayed for the repose of the souls of the lives that were lost and fortitude for their families to bear the irreparable loss.

He assured that the government will ensure that those injured were given adequate medical attention.

The FCT Minister commended the Police and other security agencies for their prompt intervention, adding that the promptness in which security agencies responded to the incident was commendable.
