Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has criticised Peter Obi over remarks referencing Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, saying the comments were inappropriate and offensive to those involved in the struggle.
The reaction followed a social media post by Obi, in which he suggested that some individuals who were active during the era of military rule now govern in ways that contradict the ideals they once advocated. He also made a comparison involving the late Head of State, Sani Abacha.
Responding via his X account, Fani-Kayode said Obi’s remarks disrespected the memory of those who participated in the June 12 pro-democracy movement and members of the National Democratic Coalition.
He described the comments as unacceptable and said they undermined the sacrifices made by activists during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule. Fani-Kayode also expressed doubt about Obi’s prospects of becoming Nigeria’s president.
Obi did not mention any individual in his original post, but his comments have generated debate across political circles and on social media.
The exchange comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with discussions around governance, democratic values, and party dynamics continuing to shape public discourse.
