The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued directives for the immediate deployment of police personnel to strategic locations, key areas, and known crime hotspots nationwide to address criminal activities and ensure safety during the festive season.
The initiative, aimed at curbing traffic robberies, highway crimes, and other offenses, seeks to safeguard lives and property amid increased mobility and public gatherings.
“The IGP has directed the immediate deployment of adequate personnel to strategic locations, key areas, and identified hotspots across all states. This measure is aimed at deterring crimes during this period of heightened movement and celebrations,” read a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday via the Nigeria Police Force’s official X handle.
The statement highlighted recent successes, including the December 10, 2024, arrest of four suspected robbers by Lagos State police operatives. The suspects, identified as Akeem Alabi, Adewale Sogbesan, Emmanuel Izeagbe, and Francis Okoko, reportedly confessed to operating as part of a robbery syndicate targeting the Costain area of Lagos.
Similarly, on December 6, 2024, police operatives in Anambra State arrested a suspected armed robber, Miracle Mwakaloi, in Awka. A search of his residence uncovered three AK-47 rifles.
The police emphasized their commitment to maintaining public safety through increased visibility and presence on major highways and in areas prone to criminal activities, particularly during the festive period.
“The NPF remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for Nigerians to celebrate the Yuletide without fear of crime,” the statement added.
The IGP also urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and remain vigilant, encouraging citizens to report suspicious activities to the police or other law enforcement agencies.
