Zulum Hails Tinubu for Approving N80bn Reconstruction of Borno’s Alau Dam

By Abigail Philip David

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving N80 billion for the reconstruction and upgrade of Alau Dam, which collapsed on September 10, 2024, causing severe flooding in Maiduguri and Jere local government areas. The disaster affected over one million people and led to widespread property destruction.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, said Zulum described Tinubu’s approval as a demonstration of leadership and good governance.

“I regard this decision to reconstruct the dam as the most gladdening tiding, not only for the millions of farmers and fishermen and the innumerable other people conducting various economic activities in and around the dam, but also for the state government striving to revive agriculture as a key pillar for rebuilding and stabilizing our insurgency-hit society,” Zulum said.

The governor expressed confidence that rebuilding the dam would prevent future flooding, which could further worsen the vulnerability of communities already devastated by Boko Haram insurgency. He praised the decision as part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at driving Nigeria’s prosperity.

Zulum also recalled Tinubu’s personal visit to Maiduguri during the disaster and his administration’s swift response in providing relief materials, which significantly eased the suffering of affected residents.

He conveyed Borno State’s gratitude for the federal government’s inclusive approach in distributing critical projects and programs across Nigeria.

The governor assured Tinubu of continued support from the state and its people for his policies, which he said are focused on national development, economic growth, and sustainable prosperity.
