Zulum lauds Tinubu, Shettima as Gubio emerges Borno APC governorship candidate

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima following the emergence of Mustapha Gubio as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking shortly after the affirmation ceremony in Maiduguri on Thursday, Zulum described Gubio’s emergence as “the will of Almighty Allah” rather than political manoeuvring.
“What we saw today is the will of Almighty Allah. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, gives power to whom He wills. There is nothing I can say other than to thank God for this opportunity,” Zulum said.
He also appreciated President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their support, saying their leadership ensured a consensus process that produced Gubio as the party’s candidate.
“I want to convey my deepest appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and my boss, Senator Kashim Shettima, for all the support that made this consensus possible,” he added.
Zulum noted that their commitment to internal party democracy had strengthened unity within the APC in Borno State.
The affirmation followed consultations among key stakeholders, with Engr. Mustapha Gubio emerging as consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ceremony was presided over by the APC primary election committee chairman, Chief Emma Eneukwu, at the former Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who attended the event, urged party members to remain united, especially those who lost out in the selection process.
“There is no victor, no vanquished in this contest. It is Allah that gives power to whomever He wills. Let us sheath our swords for the good of our people,” Shettima said.
Dignitaries at the event included former Governors Ali Modu Sheriff and Maina Ma’aji Lawan, APC Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Dalori, and other party leaders.
In his acceptance speech, Gubio pledged to consolidate on the achievements of the Zulum administration, particularly in security, education, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment.
He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and Governor Zulum for their support, describing Zulum as his mentor and benefactor.
Gubio said his administration, if elected, would intensify efforts to address insecurity, resettle displaced persons, rebuild destroyed communities, and expand education and vocational training to reduce unemployment and illiteracy.
He also pledged to strengthen healthcare delivery, support poverty alleviation programmes, improve infrastructure, and promote renewable energy solutions such as solar power for rural electrification.
Other priorities include ensuring accountability in governance, tackling corruption, improving water supply, boosting agriculture, and promoting youth engagement through sports and recreational development.

Kefas Urges Church Leaders to Defend Truth and Promote Peace in Taraba
By Aga Samuel Imoter, Jalingo
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has urged Christian leaders to defend truth, speak to political authorities when necessary and promote peace and moral values amid the social, economic and security challenges facing the country. Kefas made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing participants at the Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.
The conference, themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World,” brought together Christian ministers and leaders to discuss the role of the Church in nation-building, peacebuilding and good governance. The governor said government and the Church have distinct constitutional and spiritual responsibilities but could collaborate in areas that promote peace, development and social stability.
He urged Christian leaders to uphold truth, compassion, justice and moral discipline while advising political authorities without allowing partisan interests to compromise the Church’s independence. “The Church must not become an extension of any political party,” Kefas said, urging ministers to provide constructive guidance and resist divisions based on politics, ethnicity or personal interests.
Kefas also called on religious leaders to use their platforms to discourage corruption, drug abuse, violence, hatred and injustice, while encouraging young people to pursue legitimate opportunities. He assured residents that his administration would continue to promote fairness, justice and peaceful coexistence while protecting citizens’ rights and freedom of worship.
The governor also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with religious institutions in education, peacebuilding, community development and efforts to address drug abuse. He appealed to citizens and religious leaders to embrace unity and forgiveness, saying the development of Taraba required collective responsibility.
