Zulum Releases ₦5.81bn to Clear Retirees’ Gratuities, Support Families of Deceased Workers
…Pledges improved welfare for local government employees
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has presented cheques worth ₦5.81 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuities to retired civil servants and the families of deceased workers.
The cheques were presented on Friday at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri in the presence of leaders of organised labour and the Nigerian Union of Pensioners as part of the administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of retirees and the families of deceased civil servants.
Governor Zulum said the disbursement fulfils his administration’s commitment to settling workers’ entitlements and easing the hardship faced by pensioners.
According to a statement by his media aide, Abdulrahman Bundi, the state government has consistently prioritised workers’ welfare through initiatives such as the monthly release of ₦200 million for gratuity payments. The administration also released ₦8 billion in 2025 to settle pensioners’ entitlements and teachers’ gratuities, while ₦12 billion was disbursed in 2020 for about 5,000 retired state and local government workers.
The governor explained that ₦2.99 billion would be used to settle all outstanding gratuities owed to the families of deceased civil servants, while ₦2.82 billion would cover gratuities for retirees up to December 2022, including outstanding payments to staff of the Borno State Housing Corporation from 2013 to date.
“In fulfilment of our campaign promises, we are presenting a cheque of about ₦5.81 billion to retired and deceased civil servants,” Zulum said.
He added that about ₦3 billion had been earmarked for the families of deceased workers to enable them to live with dignity, while retired civil servants up to 2022 would receive their gratuities in full before payments commence for those who retired in 2023.
Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Lawan Umar Dalorima, commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of workers and retirees despite competing demands on government resources.
He described the payment as another demonstration of Governor Zulum’s compassionate and people-centred leadership.
Responding on behalf of organised labour, the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Mamman Bukar, thanked the governor for settling the outstanding gratuities, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
He said the payment would ease the hardship faced by pensioners and the families of deceased civil servants while strengthening workers’ confidence in the government’s commitment to their welfare.
Governor Zulum also assured local government employees that his administration would address issues affecting their welfare.
He acknowledged the challenges facing local government workers, noting that the large workforce on local government payrolls has constrained the implementation of broader welfare reforms.
“We are aware of the challenges facing local government employees. Very soon, we shall engage with your representatives to deliberate on practical measures to improve your welfare,” the governor said.
He appealed to workers to remain patient, assuring them that the government would soon meet with union leaders to discuss lasting solutions.
The event was attended by the member representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulkadir Rahis; Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani; Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe; commissioners, special advisers, permanent secretaries, labour leaders, and other senior government officials.

Kefas Urges Church Leaders to Defend Truth and Promote Peace in Taraba
By Aga Samuel Imoter, Jalingo
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has urged Christian leaders to defend truth, speak to political authorities when necessary and promote peace and moral values amid the social, economic and security challenges facing the country. Kefas made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing participants at the Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.
The conference, themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World,” brought together Christian ministers and leaders to discuss the role of the Church in nation-building, peacebuilding and good governance. The governor said government and the Church have distinct constitutional and spiritual responsibilities but could collaborate in areas that promote peace, development and social stability.
He urged Christian leaders to uphold truth, compassion, justice and moral discipline while advising political authorities without allowing partisan interests to compromise the Church’s independence. “The Church must not become an extension of any political party,” Kefas said, urging ministers to provide constructive guidance and resist divisions based on politics, ethnicity or personal interests.
Kefas also called on religious leaders to use their platforms to discourage corruption, drug abuse, violence, hatred and injustice, while encouraging young people to pursue legitimate opportunities. He assured residents that his administration would continue to promote fairness, justice and peaceful coexistence while protecting citizens’ rights and freedom of worship.
The governor also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with religious institutions in education, peacebuilding, community development and efforts to address drug abuse. He appealed to citizens and religious leaders to embrace unity and forgiveness, saying the development of Taraba required collective responsibility.
