10th Senate President’s Under 18 Unity Cup Set to Kick Off in Abuja

In a remarkable celebration of unity and talent, the 10th Senate President’s Under 18 Unity Cup is poised to captivate football enthusiasts as it kicks off from November 10 to 17, 2024, in Abuja. Themed the “Renewed Hope Edition,” this groundbreaking tournament, organized by the Grassroot Sports Federation, SOUTH SOUTH, underscores the commitment to fostering unity in diversity and nurturing young talents.

Thirteen teams will compete for the prestigious star prize, promising a spectacle of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Hon. John Bassey Ekpenyong, the tournament coordinator, outlined the objectives, emphasizing the importance of promoting unity, uncovering budding talents, creating employment opportunities for the youth, and combating restiveness.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ekpenyong expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from the National Assembly Leadership, particularly Senator Godswill Akpabio and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, towards sports development in Nigeria. The establishment of the National Sports Commission (NSC) further highlights the leadership’s dedication to advancing sports at all levels.

“The participating teams, selected from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, with two teams from each zone and a specially chosen team from Abuja, embody the rich diversity of talent within the country,” Ekpenyong stated. He noted that this tournament provides young athletes with a platform to showcase their skills, potentially paving the way for promising careers in football.

Reflecting on Senator Akpabio’s pivotal role, Ekpenyong praised the Senator’s ongoing support for grassroots sports development, dating back to his tenure as the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State. “We appreciate Senator Godswill Akpabio for championing grassroots sports development, which benefited over 200 players during his time as governor,” he stated.

As anticipation builds for the 10th Senate President’s Under 18 Unity Cup, football enthusiasts and advocates for grassroots sports eagerly await a week filled with thrilling matches, inspiring performances, and the celebration of unity through the beautiful game. This tournament not only showcases the raw talent of young athletes but also serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for Nigeria’s youth.
