A team of 40 special detectives from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit has intensified efforts to arrest Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesperson for Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The officers, reportedly deployed from Abuja, are executing the directive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Sources indicate the detectives have been stationed at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano for the past two weeks, closely monitoring the situation.
Ganduje’s Petition Sparks Tensions
Dr. Ganduje, who is embroiled in a controversy over his suspension by the APC Ganduje Ward executives in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area, accused Bature of masterminding the move. In a petition to the IGP, Ganduje alleged that Bature, who shares the same constituency, orchestrated his political troubles.
Surveillance and Harassment Allegations
Family members disclosed that plainclothes detectives have conducted multiple searches at Bature’s residence, reportedly up to five times, creating fear among his family, including his wife and children. One family member, speaking anonymously for security reasons, criticized the actions as unwarranted harassment.
Despite a court order restraining the IGP, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies from arresting or harassing Bature, the police reportedly continue their search. On Thursday, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court granted an ex parte application halting further action against Bature until January 22, 2025, when a hearing on his fundamental rights case is scheduled.
A Long-Standing Feud
The tension between Ganduje and Bature dates back to 2015, when Ganduje, as governor-elect, reportedly ordered Bature’s arrest due to political opposition during the gubernatorial election. The latest dispute arises from Ganduje’s claims that Bature played a key role in his recent suspension from the APC.
Police Efforts and Silence from Authorities
The deployment of 40 officers by the IGP Monitoring Unit highlights the seriousness of the allegations. However, attempts to reach the National Police Spokesperson for comments have been unsuccessful, as calls and messages remain unanswered.
The unfolding situation has raised concerns about political interference in law enforcement and the impact on the families involved.
