Gov. Diri Wrestling Classics: Bayelsa, Delta dominate in Greco roman

The 1st ever Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics entered day two on Saturday as team Delta and Bayelsa dominated the day with three and two gold medals each in the Greco Roman men’s event held at the indoor sport hall of the Samson Siasia Sport Complex, Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

The host started on a winning note as Perezighe Ogidi of team Bayelsa in the 55 kg event defeated Amuyi Sunday of team Edo to clinch gold, while Amuyi had to settle for silver. Abraham Etim (Cross River) won the bronze medal match.

In the 60 kg weight class, Emienido Dick of won the first gold of the day for Edo State with Segun Adebayo of Team Lagos – whom he defeated in the final – settling for silver. Richard Seitonkumo (Bayelsa State) won the bronze medal.

However, in the 63kg class, NSCDC’s Ikechukwu Robinson overcame Umar Muhammad of Team Bauchi to win gold, while Umar Muhammad had to settle for silver, Fayowole Olubode of Lagos won the bronze medal match.

The gold medal reign continued for NSCDC again in the 67kg event as they claimed another gold medal with Parkinstan Alfred as he defeated Edo’s Irobekan Bright, while Fred Godfrey (Bayelsa state) won bronze.

With NSCDC clinching back-to-back gold in two different weight class event, it was the turn of team Bayelsa to claime gold in the 72kg event as Solomon Ulabo won gold for the host with silver going to Ituru Oke of Team Edo state. Idowu Albert of Lagos won the bronze medal.

In the 77kg weight class, Nworie Emmanuel of Team Delta defeated Samuel Isamah of Team Lagos in the final to land gold, with the bronze medals going to Abonifo Ehichie (Edo State).

With three more weight class to round up the event for the day, in 87kg, the Nigerian Army finally won a gold medal as Okeke Tochukwu defeated Samuel of Bayelsa state as Samuel had to settle for the silver. Okuma Matthias of Edo State won the bronze medal.

In the 97kg, Delta State Okoru Augustine won gold as Bayelsa’s Omega Bassey settled for silver while Ezekiel Appah of the FRSC won the bronze medal match.

It was another gold medal for team Delta State in the last remaining weight category of the day as Ilukwe Patrick clinched the gold in the 130kg, while Odogwu Atokaritoy of the Nigerian Police Force settled for silver, Ebikabowei Samuel of Bayelsa state won the bronze.
