President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extolled President Muhammadu Buhari for deeming it fit during his administration to honour Chief M.K.O Abiola in recognition of the June 12, 1993 elections.
According to Tinubu, the act was a show of courage from Buhari to set the records straight and heal festering wounds.During his acceptance speech after being awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), the incoming president acknowledged the significance of Buhari’s decision to honor Abiola. He commended Buhari for displaying courage and noted that previous leaders had avoided such a step.Tinubu expressed, “President Buhari, your bravery is evident in making bold decisions that others shied away from. One such decision is acknowledging the injustice of the annulment of the 1993 elections, designating June 12 as Democracy Day, and conferring the highest national honor upon Chief M.K.O Abiola.”
“You went to great lengths to rectify the historical records and address longstanding grievances. The justice you pursued holds significant significance today, as the people have entrusted us with their faith. You have fulfilled your role, Mr. President, and now a tremendous responsibility will fall upon me.”
Tinubu is set to be inaugurated as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 29.
