ECOWAS Summit on Niger Military Coup: Closed-Door Talks Commence Following Tinubu’s Address

Abuja plays host to the gathering of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Heads of State and Governments, who have embarked on a summit primarily addressing the recent military coup in Niger Republic. The summit has now entered a confidential phase for in-depth discussions.

During the opening ceremony, ECOWAS Chairman and Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, addressed an audience of over 12 participating member-states. Among the notable attendees were President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea Bissau, and President Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi.

Also in attendance were President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania, President Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, and Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs represented member-states The Gambia and Liberia at the summit. The focus now turns to the behind-closed-doors discussions aimed at addressing the pressing issues stemming from the recent coup in Niger Republic.
