NITDA’s Blockchain Solution to Authenticate NYSC Certificates

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has unveiled an innovative initiative to utilize blockchain technology for verifying the legitimacy of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates.

Yusuf Kashafu, Director-General of NITDA, disclosed this groundbreaking development during a keynote presentation at the policy dialogue event titled “Driving Sustainable Economic Growth and Development through the Adoption of Blockchain Technology.” The event, co-hosted by NITDA and the Stakeholders in Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria (SiBAN), took place in Lagos.

Addressing Certificate Forgery
NITDA’s initiative targets the persistent issue of certificate forgery and fraudulent certification. In partnership with the newly appointed NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, NITDA is at the forefront of creating an advanced certificate authentication system using blockchain technology.

Kashafu stated,

“The prevalence of forgery and fraudulent issuance of NYSC certificates has raised concerns. This initiative is a response to address this issue.”
This innovative approach is designed to ensure the credibility and authenticity of NYSC certificates, bolstering transparency and instilling trust in the certification process.

Harnessing Blockchain’s Verification Potential
Kashafu highlighted the transformative capabilities of blockchain technology in overhauling the certificate verification process. This initiative holds the potential to usher in a new era of secure and dependable certification.

In his words,

“We acknowledge the urgent need to combat the rampant problem of counterfeit NYSC certificates in Nigeria.”
“By harnessing the capabilities of blockchain, our goal is to establish a secure and unalterable system that will allow individuals, institutions, and employers to easily verify the legitimacy of NYSC certificates.”
According to NYSC regulations, forging their certificate can lead to a jail sentence depending on the court’s ruling. Nigeria has witnessed numerous high-profile cases of NYSC certificate forgery.
