Spain Advances to Women’s World Cup Semi-Finals for the First Time, Awaits Japan or Sweden

Spain has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup for the first time, triumphing over the Netherlands with a 2-1 victory in extra time. Awaiting them in the next round will be either Japan or Sweden, who will be playing later on Friday.

Salma Paralluelo, a young talent from Barcelona, sealed Spain’s victory with a well-executed finish during a counterattack in the 111th minute of the match held in Wellington. The encounter had ended 1-1 in regular time and proved to be an eventful contest.

Despite Spain’s dominance in the first half, which included hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession and having a goal disallowed due to VAR offside ruling, the Netherlands managed to gain momentum in the second half. The Dutch team appeared to have a chance to take the lead when a penalty was initially awarded after a foul on Lineth Beerensteyn in the box. However, VAR intervention led to a review by the referee, resulting in the penalty being overturned due to insufficient contact.

Spain eventually secured their lead through a penalty, converted by Mariona Caldentey with nine minutes left in normal time. However, Netherlands’ defender Stefanie van der Gragt, playing in her final game before retirement, equalized in stoppage time, sending the match into extra time.

During extra time, the Netherlands had opportunities, but it was the substitute Salma Paralluelo who stole the spotlight, maneuvering past a Dutch defender and delivering a powerful low shot into the net to secure Spain’s victory.

Following this result, Japan and Sweden were set to face off in the quarter-finals for the chance to play against Spain in the next round. The two teams were expected to showcase contrasting styles of play, with Japan known for their counterattacks and precise passing, while Sweden has emphasized a strong defensive strategy throughout the tournament.
