Tension Grips Police Barracks as Inspector’s Son Fatally Stabs Neighbor

By Daniel Edu

A wave of tension has swept through the Officers’ Barracks at the Warri Area Command of the Nigeria Police in Delta State following a tragic incident where Destiny Ogbantu, the son of a serving Inspector, allegedly stabbed his neighbor, Onyebuchi Emeka, to death.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 22, 2023, when a heated argument between Destiny and Onyebuchi escalated to violence, leading to the fatal stabbing near their residences in Block D, Warri Barracks.

Eyewitnesses recounted the shocking sequence of events, stating that in the heat of the altercation, Destiny hastily retrieved a knife and a dagger from his father’s apartment and pursued Onyebuchi across various blocks within the barracks until the latter fell into a drainage ditch.

In full view of other residents, including his mother, Destiny repeatedly stabbed Onyebuchi, inflicting deep wounds on his back and chest. Family members rushed the victim to a nearby private hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission due to severe blood loss from the deep wounds.

An eyewitness remarked, “All of this was witnessed by residents of the barracks, including the mother of the alleged suspect and his siblings.”

Reportedly, in the wake of her son’s horrific act, the suspect’s mother fled the barracks with her children, including the suspect, and their current whereabouts remain unknown.

Inspector Ogbantu, the father of the suspect, has been apprehended as a proxy for his son’s actions and is presently in police custody.

In response to the incident, the Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Civil Rights Council has verified the occurrence and called upon the Nigeria Police Force not to overlook the case. A unit Coordinator of the group, Comrade Ojumude Bishop, led a protest to the Area Commander of the Warri Area Police Command, along with other members, demanding justice for the deceased young man.

The protesters insisted that the father of the suspect must ensure his son’s compliance with the law and refrain from any attempts to manipulate the facts surrounding the case.
