**All Souls’ Day 2023 Date and History:**
All Souls’ Day will be observed on Thursday, November 2, immediately following Halloween on October 31 and All Saints’ Day on November 1. The tradition of offering prayers for the deceased has ancient roots, notably in 2 Maccabees 12:42–46. However, the establishment of a specific day for intercession for the departed souls is credited to St. Odilo of Cluny, a venerated Roman Catholic saint. It is believed that this custom was initiated at St. Odilo’s abbey of Cluny sometime between 998 and 1030. What began as a local practice quickly spread to other monasteries and dioceses across France. After being adopted in Rome in the 14th century, it has become a universal observance in the Western Catholic tradition.
