Kidnapping Surge in Lagos: Residents Alarmed as Criminals Demand Hefty Ransoms

Lagos residents have raised concerns over an uptick in kidnappings, particularly in the Mainland areas, including Alimosho and Amuwo Odofin Local Government Areas. Wealthy individuals are reportedly targeted, facing demands for substantial ransoms.

The surge in incidents became noticeable around August, with the latest victim being a car dealer known as Ejike Conversion, abducted in Ladipo Spare Parts Market. Ejike was reportedly taken while taking inventory at his plaza, and the armed kidnappers have demanded a N500 million ransom.

In a separate case, an unidentified businessman in Ago Palace was kidnapped earlier this month, with abductors seeking a N500 million ransom. Architect Daario Naharis shared his near-abduction experience in the same area in November, emphasizing the dangers.

Additionally, the owner of a popular hotel in Ijegun was kidnapped in October, with a reported ransom payment of about N100 million before his release. Similar incidents occurred in Governors Road, Ikotun, Gowon Estate, and other Alimosho locations, with victims compelled to pay significant ransoms for their release.

A 13-year-old girl, Miracle Adereti, was also kidnapped in the Ikotun area on December 1, with her father, Segun Adereti, expressing distress over the situation. Some cases go unreported due to threats from kidnappers, creating challenges for law enforcement.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, is yet to confirm these reports. The surge in kidnappings raises concerns about the safety and security of residents in various parts of Lagos.
