Borno Declares One-Day Fast to Address Insecurity, Economic Challenges

The Borno State Government has announced a one-day statewide fast slated for Monday, February 19, to seek divine intervention amidst the escalating cost of food items and the surge in landmine explosions along major roads.

Governor Babagana Zulum made this declaration in a statewide broadcast on Friday, expressing deep concern over the recent hardships faced by citizens, particularly the exorbitant prices of essential food items.

Zulum acknowledged the burden this places on families and individuals and reassured the populace of decisive steps being taken to alleviate the situation. He emphasized the government’s focus on revitalizing agriculture to boost food production and reduce dependency on food aid.

The governor outlined plans to invest in modern farming techniques, provide support to local farmers, and incentivize agricultural innovation, aiming not only to lower food prices but also to create sustainable livelihoods.

In addition to agricultural initiatives, the government is intensifying efforts to distribute palliatives, especially in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere, to cushion the impact of rising costs.

Addressing the alarming increase in landmine explosions, Zulum condemned the cowardly acts that threaten citizen safety and disrupt essential services. He pledged to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators, whom he suspects are attempting to undermine the state’s security progress.

Consequently, Zulum declared a one-day voluntary fast on Monday, February 19, urging religious leaders and citizens to participate in prayer for peace, prosperity, and the state’s development.

This move by the Borno State Government aligns with recent efforts by other states and the federal government to address food security challenges and mitigate the impact of rising living costs across the country.
