Lagos State Government Denies Signing Green Line Rail Construction Contract

By Daniel Edu

Contrary to recent reports, the Lagos State Government has categorically denied signing any contract for the construction of the proposed green rail line. The refutation follows a claim made by popular social media account Lagospedia, asserting that the government had officially signed a contract for the 68-kilometre green metro line.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had initially announced plans for the green rail line in 2021, aimed at enhancing infrastructural development around the Lekki Free Trade Zone. In 2022, the state government disclosed completing the expression of interest and nearing the conclusion of the feasibility study for this significant rail investment.

However, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on New Media, Jubril Gawat, clarified in a post on Monday that the reported contract pertained to the second phase of the red line. This phase links the red line from the Ebute Metta station to connect with the blue line at the National Theatre.

Gawat’s response sought to dispel the misconception surrounding the alleged signing of the green metro line contract. He emphasized, “Not Yet. What was signed was the second phase of the red line which links the red line from the Ebute Metta station to connect the blue line at the national theatre.”
