An unidentified truck driver is currently in police custody following the tragic death of Miss Mary Ogechi, a recent graduate of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. Ogechi was fatally injured in an accident on the Aba-Owerri Road on Tuesday.
The victim had recently celebrated her graduation from the polytechnic, where she emerged as the top accounting student in her department. She was reportedly on her way to the school to process her results in preparation for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization when the accident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, Ogechi was struck by a commercial tricycle rider, causing her to fall onto the road. As she lay injured, a trailer driver, attempting to avoid her, accidentally ran over her legs, resulting in severe injuries. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Family members and friends mourned Ogechi’s untimely passing on social media, highlighting her exceptional character and promising future.
In response to her death, students of Abia State Polytechnic staged a protest, blocking the expressway to demand justice and increased road safety measures. They lamented the recurring incidents of reckless driving that have endangered staff and students of the school.
Police Public Relations Officer Chinaka Maureen confirmed the incident, stating that the driver responsible for the accident was in custody, and investigations were ongoing. The authorities have recovered the vehicle involved in the incident.
This tragic incident comes amidst growing concerns over road safety and the need for stricter measures to prevent accidents caused by reckless driving.
