Rivers Community Grieves as Wigwe, Wife, Son Are Laid to Rest Today

The community of Omueke in Isiokpo, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, is in mourning as preparations are underway for the burial of the late former Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, in his hometown today (Saturday).

The remains of Dr. Wigwe, along with those of his wife and son, were transported in a solemn motorcade from the Port Harcourt International Airport to his father’s compound in Omueke, Isiokpo. The procession, which left the airport at approximately 1:33 pm on Friday, was met with sorrowful anticipation by the community.

Residents of Omueke, adorned in black attire, gathered to welcome the bodies, while married women from Isiokpo assembled at the entrance of the community to offer prayers for divine intervention against untimely deaths and the loss of prominent community members.

Expressing their grief, one of the women lamented, “Our son, Herbert, took care of us, widows, and children in this area. We are praying to God to avert untimely deaths and protect our prominent people.”

The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, and community elders received the bodies upon their arrival in Isiokpo, describing Dr. Wigwe’s passing as a significant loss and pledging to immortalize his memory.

Preparations are underway for a wake to be held at Wigwe University, founded by the late financial mogul and philanthropist. The university, located near his residence, is nearing completion and will serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy.

As dignitaries, including governors, ministers, politicians, industry leaders, and traditional rulers, prepare to pay their respects at the burial ceremony, the Rivers State Police Command has announced reinforced security measures to ensure a peaceful event. Mobile police officers and undercover personnel will be deployed to manage the expected large gathering of mourners, according to a statement issued by the State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko.
