The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the arrest of Segun Olatunji, the Editor of FirstNews based in Lagos, and has demanded his immediate release. Olatunji was apprehended from his residence in Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos State last Friday by armed individuals suspected to be soldiers.

This arrest is believed to be connected to recent articles published on his platform, notably “Revealed: Defence Chief Running Office like Family Business – Public Interest Lawyers,” and “Exclusive: How Contractor, Company Stole N100bn, Laundered Funds for Top Govt Officials – Investigation.”

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by its Assistant National Secretary, Akorede Rauph Opeyemi, the NUJ expressed grave concern over Olatunji’s abduction, emphasizing the perilous environment journalists face in the course of their work.

The union asserted that Olatunji’s arrest poses a direct threat to press freedom in Nigeria and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

The statement highlighted eyewitness reports indicating that Olatunji was taken from his home by ten heavily armed men, two of whom were reportedly dressed in military attire. While the responsible agency for his arrest remains unclear, the NUJ underscored the importance of safeguarding press freedom and the rights of media practitioners.

The NUJ stressed that freedom of the press and expression are fundamental pillars of democracy and urged the Nigerian government to ensure the protection of journalists and their right to work without fear of intimidation or persecution.

Furthermore, the NUJ denounced such actions as attempts to silence journalists and discourage investigative reporting, emphasizing that journalism serves the public interest and should not be subjected to impunity.

In conclusion, the NUJ reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Segun Olatunji, emphasizing that his detention undermines democratic principles and the rule of law.
