Federal Government Declares Wednesday Work-Free in Honor of Workers’ Day

In commemoration of Workers’ Day, the Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 1st, as a public holiday.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated the administration’s commitment, under President Bola Tinubu, to promoting innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces across the nation.

He emphasized the government’s dedication to prioritizing citizen safety and well-being, particularly amid the challenges posed by climate change.

“In line with this year’s theme, which focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, I wish to affirm that the Federal Government remains resolute in prioritizing the safety and well-being of all citizens,” the minister stated.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to support the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda while extending warm wishes for a joyful celebration to all workers.

As this year’s Workers’ Day approaches, labor unions have been advocating for an increase in the minimum wage in the country.

While the Federal Government has established a committee to deliberate on a new minimum wage, it is unlikely that an announcement regarding a new minimum wage will be made by the President as the committee’s work is still ongoing.
