Group Petitions for Prosecution of Edo APC Candidate Over Naira Abuse

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, faces potential prosecution under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act of 2007 for alleged naira abuse. A coalition of civil society organizations, known as the Network of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria, has accused him of abusing the Nigerian currency.

In a petition dated May 2, 2024, addressed to the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the group urged for Okpebholo’s prosecution, citing violations of the CBN Act of 2007 which deems such actions as punishable offenses.

The coalition, represented by its National Coordinator, Victor Kalu, and National Secretary, Ali Abacha, emphasized the importance of upholding the law, especially by prominent individuals and lawmakers.

While commending the EFCC for its prompt actions against individuals caught abusing the naira in viral videos, the coalition called for similar investigations into Okpebholo’s alleged involvement in such acts.

Expressing disappointment over the reported incident, the coalition demanded accountability from Okpebholo as a representative of the people. They warned of further actions, including peaceful protests, if the EFCC fails to address the issue.

In response, Senator Okpebholo refuted the allegations, labeling them as false and a smear campaign orchestrated by his detractors and the opposition ahead of the gubernatorial election. He called for an investigation into the origins of the petition and urged the public to reject misinformation.

Maintaining his innocence, Okpebholo emphasized his commitment to serving Edo State and bringing federal government projects closer to the people if elected governor.

The senator denounced the alleged plot to tarnish his image and expressed confidence in the support of Edo people, reaffirming his dedication to their welfare and development.
